The 21st staging of the Alliance Buccaneer Golf Tournament will tee off tomorrow and Sunday at the Caymanas Golf Club with tee times between 7:00 am and 1:00 pm each day.
The pros will take the course at 10:00 am, while the juniors will tee off at 1:00 pm.
The tournament features two different competitions running concurrently. One will be a two-day, 36-hole Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) qualifier, while the other is to be played on Sunday in a Stableford format.
The format of play features Medal Play HCP 1-12, Stableford 13-24, Professional, Men, Seniors, Super Seniors, Ladies and Juniors, while on Sunday it will be Stableford full hanidcap 10-12, 13-24, 25-36, Men and Ladies.
The Juniors will compete for the Vitoria Marley Trophy.
According to tournament director David Mais, more than one hundred golfers will be on the course, including several local professional golfers and amateurs. Jamaica’s number one golfer Wesley Brown will lead the field of nine professionals, including former national champion Fabian Campbell.
The amateurs will include former Jamaica Golf Association (JGA) presidents Gordon Hutchinson and Wayne Chai Chong, Maurice Foster, Peter Chin (current president of JGA) and Teddy Richards.
In the Seniors competition, Rory Jardine, Robert ‘Bobby’ Chin, Gregg Chong, and Tommy Lee will face off, while Shawn Morris, Dr Mark Newnham and Radcliffe Knibbs will battle for the Men’s title.
In the Ladies show, Jodi Munn-Barrow, Kai Harris and Michelle Gabay, plus several Juniors such as Rocco Lopez, Tristan Brown and Evelyn May will take to the course.
The proceeds will go towards perennial beneficiary the Laws Street Trade Training Centre and the target is $1 million.
Donald Chung, who spoke on behalf of the Laws Street Trade Training Centre at the launch event at Spanish Court Hotel on Wednesday, says the funds will be used to provide for the needy in the inner city as well as provide skills training.
A new charity, the Jamaica Cancer Society, has been added this year in memory of golf aficionado Mark Chin who died of cancer earlier in the year.
Yulit Gordon, executive director of the Jamaica Cancer Society, indicated that the funds will be used for pubic education and screening for the public, including persons in the Laws Street area.
According to Peter Chin, president of title sponsor Alliance Investment Management, and the president of the Jamaica Golf Association, the company was very pleased to be supporting two important charities through the tournament, plus it serves in providing quality competition to all the categories of golfers in the island.
This year’s competition is being played in the memory of six of Jamaica’s outstanding past national representatives — Milton ‘Buddy’ Josephs, Izette Rhone, Lenan Lennie Chin, John Fulford, Al Chong, and Mark Chin.
