Dacosta Cup semi-final race reaches boiling point
MONTEGO BAY, St James — The Jarrett Park double-header could help decide two of the four semi-finalists in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup competition, as the quarter-final phase comes to a close with eight games today.
After two of the three rounds, no fewer than 10 schools still have mathematical chances of advancing to the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup as well as the Ben Francis Knockout that will be played next Tuesday with the final set for Friday, November 18.
Realistically and barring any major upsets, defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS), the unbeaten Cornwall College, Lennon High and Clarendon College need only a draw in their games to stay alive in the race for the final slated for December 3.
At Jarrett Park, Cornwall College, who are seeking to tie the record of 16 consecutive daCosta Cup wins in one season set by Rusea’s High in 2011, will face Manchester High with both teams locked on six points, each at the top of Group P.
Cornwall College, who will meet Wolmer’s Boys’ on Saturday at Sabina Park in the FLOW Super Cup final, lead on goal difference, and a draw would favour the Montego Bay team and send them back to the semi-finals for the first time since 2007.
A win for Manchester High would see them make it to the last four in back-to-back seasons, but will face a team coming off a massive win on Saturday and will be full of confidence, especially playing in front of what is expected to be another big home crowd.
Jourdaine Fletcher has scored 26 goals in all competitions so far, seven in the daCosta Cup since the start of the inter-zone and seven in three games in the FLOW Super Cup, inclusive of two hat-tricks. He alone could give Manchester High’s defence a lot to think about today.
In the second game, Lennon High, Rusea’s High and Dinthill Technical are in a fierce three-way battle that could come down to who scores the most goals today.
Lennon High, who are legitimate dark horses in the race for the semi-finals, lead with six points and need only to avoid a loss by two goals to Rusea’s High to return to the semi-finals for the first time since their controversial loss to Rusea’s in the final in 2010.
Even if Rusea’s were to win the game, they could inadvertently be helping Dinthill Technical who would advance with a big win over out of contention Paul Bogle High at Dinthill in Linstead.
Dinthill Technical rebounded from their 1-0 loss to Lennon High to beat Rusea’s High 3-1 last Wednesday, and could sneak into the last four with a sizable win, depending on what happens at Jarrett Park.
Meanwhile, inform STETHS and Clarendon College, both coming off FLOW Super Cup semi-final defeats, are expected to win their games and cruise into the last four to keep their silverware hopes alive.
STETHS, who were beaten in sudden-death penalties by Wolmer’s Boys’ on Saturday, have scored seven times in their last two games, the most by any team left in the race for rural area football honours, and face a Petersfield High team that must pull off an improbable win of three goals or more.
STETHS will, however, have to shake off a lethargic performance in Kingston in Saturday, a performance that will give Petersfield hopes that they could exploit and steal a famous win in Santa Cruz.
Clarendon College had conceded one goal in four games, until they gave up four to Cornwall College on Saturday in the FLOW Super Cup loss, the most goals they had given up in one game in many years. They could take out their frustrations on a Spot Valley High team that has conceded five in two games played in the quarter-finals and nine in their last two games.
