Clash of the CCs
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Cornwall College coach Dr Dean Weatherly is expecting a tough battle on Saturday when his undefeated team takes on Clarendon College in one semi-final of the FLOW Super Cup tournament at Sabina Park, starting at 4:00pm.
Both teams scored contrasting quarter-final wins last Saturday to advance to the semi-finals of the Super Cup for the first time and remained on course to add the title to their winning list.
While Cornwall College was facing their toughest test of the season to beat long-time rivals Rusea’s High 4-3 on penalty kicks after a regulation and extra-time 1-1 draw at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, Clarendon College were sailing smoothly to a 7-1 mauling of Excelsior High at Sabina Park in Kingston.
If both teams maintain their winning form, Saturday’s game could be the first of three in which they will meet for the remainder of the season as they are on course to meet in the semi-finals of the daCosta Cup if they win their quarter-final groups and also the semi-finals of the Ben Francis KO.
“Clarendon will be tough, tougher than our last Super Cup game,” Weatherly told The Jamaica Observer West on Monday. “Clarendon seem to be firing on all cylinders and we have to be aware and prepare for them.”
The man who has led Cornwall College to eight titles said “They have a very good all-round team and we can’t take them lightly. They have a very good coaching staff and it will be a very enjoyable game to watch come Saturday.”
The prospect of meeting the Paul “Tegat” Davis-coached team three times did not worry him. “If you want to be the champion it does not matter who your opponent will be, even if you play 10 times, that’s how the competition is set up and we just have to manage what comes to us,” said Weatherly.
Jourdaine Fletcher has scored all of Cornwall College’s goals in regulation time in the Super Cup as after his hat-trick against Denham Town in the first round, he gave Cornwall College the lead against Rusea’s on Saturday, only for Daniel Reid to equalise.
Fletcher was one of the four successful penalty takers for Cornwall along with Peter-Lee Vassell, Michael Heaven and Dwayne Harding, while Ranaldo Thompson, Deshane Beckford and Javoy McLeod were on target for Rusea’s but Sachin Wilmot hit the upright with his shot and Nazime Matalie kicked wide.
The Cornwall College defence will have to deal with a revved up Clarendon College attack that is led by Creggton Charlton who scored a hat-trick against Excelsior as well as national Under-17 striker Nicque Daley and Shande James.
The Cornwall College backline has given up just five goals in 16 games and they will again be depended on to come up trumps on Saturday.
