5 make it two-straight in daCosta Cup quarters
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) led five teams which won back-to-back games in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition setting up what could be a dramatic final set of games next week in the race for the semi-finals.
FLOW Super Cup semi-finalists STETHS, Clarendon College and Cornwall College, as well as Lennon and Manchester High are all on six points after wins yesterday, while Rusea’s High lost for the first time this season, beaten by Dinthill Technical, as five teams including former champions Glenmuir High lost back-to-back games, effectively ending their interest in the competition as they cannot advance to the next round.
Led by two goals from Cashine Constantine, STETHS beat Vere Technical 4-1 to take over sole leadership in Group R with six points; Clarendon College beat Little London 3-0 to move to six points in Group S; Cornwall College won their 15th straight daCosta Cup game and extended their unbeaten run to 17 overall with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ocho Rios High; Manchester High came from behind to beat Glenmuir High 2-1, while Lennon High won 1-0 to keep their hopes alive.
At the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex, the home team did not give Vere Technical any time to settle and were up 2-0 after six minutes with goals from Constantine and Demar James.
Constantine made it 3-0 in the 44th minute before Shandel Senior pulled one back for Vere in the 69th minute, but Javoney James restored his team’s three-goal margin in the 73rd minute.
At Frome Sports Grounds, Ronaldo Richards scored twice and Clive Jarrett got the other for red-hot Clarendon College, who scored their second 3-0 margin, turning back the plucky Little London in front of their home crowd.
Jourdaine Fletcher scored a double to rescue a flat-looking Cornwall College, who came from behind to beat Ocho Rios High 2-1 at Jarrett Park, as they chalked up their 15th win and pulled to within one of equalling the record of 16 straight that was set by Rusea’s High in 2011.
Demar Simmonds gave Ocho Rios the lead after four minutes when he poked home a ball from a melee, the first goal the former champions were conceding in five daCosta Cup matches.
Fletcher equalised in the 28th minute from the penalty spot, then scored the winner in the 74th minute as Cornwall improved to six points.
Manchester High also came from behind to beat Glenmuir High 2-1 and improved to six points in Group P, as Ajay Chin and Marcell Holness scored in the second half.
Fitzroy Cummings scored for Lennon High as they edged Paul Bogle High to keep their record perfect in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Dinthill bounced back from their loss to Lennon High last week to beat Rusea’s High 3-1 and keep their slim hopes of advancing alive.
Richard Reeves scored twice and Kimani Pryce got the other for Dinthill Technical, while Nazime Matalie got Rusea’s goal.
Showan Barton scored both goals for Petersfield High as they beat Fair Prospect 2-1 and Steer Town beat Spot Valley High 3-0 with goals from Dwayne Miller, Oneil Henry and Romaine Thompson.
