STETHS blank Bridgeport to roar into Super Cup semi-final
CATHERINE HALL, St James — St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) returned to the semi-finals of the ISSA/FLOW Super Cup knock-out after beating Bridgeport High 2-0 in their quarter-final game at the Montego Bay Sports Complex last night.
Goals in either half from Alex Thompson and Demar James ensured STETHS at least equalled their best performance in the competition after they had made it to the last four in the inaugural 2014 tournament.
At press time, Rusea’s and Cornwall College were locked at 1-1.
It was a gallant effort for the Bridgeport team that was making their first appearance in the competition and coach Garnett Lawrence hailed the effort.
“We played well and I think my young team did well… we were able to knock the ball around a bit and that gave us some confidence,” he said.
STETHS Omar Wedderburn said his team had no real game plan coming in except that “we told them (the players) to go and have some fun”.
STETHS, who had to come from behind three times last week to beat Holy Trinity 4-3 here, was never pushed hard yesterday as they controlled the tempo of the game from the start and could have won by a wider margin, hitting the frame of the goal three times.
After coming close twice in the first nine minutes, STETHS finally took the lead in the 18th minute when a low, hard shot from Thompson went through the legs of Bridgeport goalkeeper Kashwayne Stanbury and trickled across the goal line.
Dante Green got a chance to respond three minutes later, and after getting away down the right flank, skied the ball high over the cross bar.
STETHS’ goalkeeper Kenroy Wallace did well in time added on at the end of the first half when he was forced to keep a ball out with his feet.
Jovoney Brown should have added a second early in the second half when he was served up with a pass from the right side, but missed the ball completely from two yards out.
After STETHS hit the post twice, James finished off a delightful two-man combination in the 78th minute.
Bridgeport were handed a lifeline to pull one back in the 80th minute, but Shakeen Powell’s penalty kick was well saved by Wallace.
