7-1 mauling
A three-timer by captain Creggton Charlton piloted Clarendon College to a commanding 7-1 spanking of Excelsior High in their ISSA/FLOW Super Cup quarter-final contest at Sabina Park yesterday.
Charlton netted in the 25th, 51st and 85th minutes in laying the platform for Dominic Lemont (54th), Donovan Noble (61st), Shande James (65th) and Nicque Daley (71st) to complete the rout.
Substitute Raewin Senior got Excelsior’s consolation in the 90th minute.
The much anticipated clash did not materialise as Clarendon College went rampant and completely outclassed the opponents to progress to the semi-finals for the first time. The Chapleton-based team will meet the winner of the Cornwall College-Rusea’s contest.
Meanwhile, in the feature contest of the Sabina Park double-header, Kingston College and Wolmer’s Boys’ were goalless at press time.
It was a tentative start by both teams in the early exchanges of the curtain-raiser, but Clarendon College gradually gained the ascendancy with a few colourful build-ups.
They went close in the 23rd minute when sloppy defensive work allowed Daley a grand opportunity, but his tame shot was grasped by custodian Romario Palma.
But before Excelsior could breathe a sigh of relief, Charlton pounced down the right channel and made no mistake in firing home from an angle.
Clarendon College should have gone further ahead, but Charlton misfired after getting on the end of a right-sided cross from James.
Daley went on the probe shortly after and rounded two defenders before tumbling over inside the area, but his appeal for a penalty was ignored by referee Grafique King as the score remained unchanged at the break.
Excelsior came to life immediately upon resumption and could have been back on level terms had Tyane Wilson put in a better effort from Alique Skerritt’s cross.
That would later prove costly as Charlton extended the lead when he tapped home from close range.
Lemont made it 3-0 three minute later when he stabbed home a rebound after Noble’s powerfully struck free kick from inside the arch was blocked by Palma.
With the wind knocked out of their opponents, the former daCosta Cup champions went in for the kill and the following three goals came in quick succession.
Charlton’s right-sided free kick was expertly headed home by Noble, afterwhich James arrived in time to slot home the loose ball four minutes later after the defenders failed to clear their lines cleanly.
After causing problems on a number of occasions, Daley eventually got on the score sheet six minutes later when he dismissed a defender and calmly fired home from inside the area.
And Charlton, who started the rout, befittingly returned to cap off a deserved three-timer and the win when he got on the end of a through pass from substitute Raheem Stone and calmly placed his shot wide of a diving Palma.
Lenworth Hyde, technical director of Clarendon College, attributed the victory to intense preparation.
“I think we worked hard this week, the preparation leading up to the whole season was intense and the guys are focused. We decided that we wanted to go one step better than last year, hence that’s why played so hard,” a beaming Hyde told the
Jamaica Observer in a post-match interview.
Xavier Gilbert, a member of the Excelsior coaching staff, was disappointed.
“It was just one of those bad days for us because we weren’t as good as we should have been. We didn’t push them on the back foot as much as we expected, although we had our moments early out, but as soon as they scored, it was difficult for us,” Gilbert noted.
