Open Junior Tennis Champs serves off this weekend
Aspiring junior tennis players, desirous of playing in international tournaments, will have the opportunity to sharpen their skills during the fifth staging of the Mayberry Investments Limited Open Junior Tennis Championships.
The two-day event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at the Liguanea Club, New Kingston. The action starts at 9:00 am tomorrow, and the finals are set to begin on Sunday at 3:00 pm.
The competition will engage approximately 90 players — boys and girls in the age-group categories 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. The players will not only be playing for a trophy, which is the grand prize, but also points that will add to their national rankings.
Anika Smith, assistant vice-president for marketing at Mayberry Investments Limited, said her company’s participation speaks volumes to their contribution to youth development.
“We view this tournament as our way of giving back to the community. We recognise the importance of sports and the positive impact it has on the youth, and we look forward to an exceptional tournament where these young tennis players will display their skills on court,” Smith said.
According to tournament director Llockett McGregor, it also serves as a good warm-up for junior tennis players in general.
“The level of participation expected will lend credence to the growing level of support in Jamaica at the junior level and will address the overall aim of boosting the level of play in the sport,” McGregor said.
