Cornwall, Rusea’s showdown Saturday
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Former national football champions and long-time rivals Cornwall College and Rusea’s High will meet head-on to earn a semi-final spot in the lucrative FLOW Super Cup competition when they lock horns in the second game of a double header at the Montego Bay Sports Complex set to start at 7:00pm Saturday.
Both teams are coming off impressive 3-0 wins over Manning Cup teams Denham Town and Haile Selassie High, respectively, in the opening round last weekend, and one will meet the winner of the quarterfinal game between Clarendon College and Excelsior High in the November 5th semi-final.
Based on the turnout last weekend, the Montego Bay Sports Complex should be humming on Saturday as thousands of supporters are expected to turn up for the big clash that could dominate the round.
In the first game on Saturday, St Elizabeth Technical will be seeking to return to the semi-finals when they take on Bridgeport High after outscoring Holy Trinity 4-3 last weekend.
A win for either Cornwall College or Rusea’s High on Saturday would see either team qualifying for the semi-final for the first time.
Cornwall were knocked out in the first round in 2014 and failed to make it back to the cash-rich competition last year, while this was the first time Rusea’s High were qualifying.
On Friday, red hot Jourdaine Fletcher scored all three goals as Cornwall College cruised past Denham Town High, and 24 hour later Rusea’s scored three times in the first 37 minutes to dismiss the Geoffrey Maxwell-coached Haile Selassie.
Both teams would have played daCosta Cup quarterfinal-round games yesterday but up to then were both unbeaten. Cornwall College were perfect through 14 games while Rusea’s had drawn twice in Zone B, against Frome Technical and Green Island in back-to-back games.
Something will have to give in the game that must provide a winner, as both teams have been solid in defence. Rusea’s have not allowed a goal in seven games, while Cornwall College’s run is at four straight.
It’s at the other end of the field that they will attract attention and Cornwall College are far ahead on the stats sheet with 51 goals in 14 games while Rusea’s have scored 30 goals in 10 games.
Cornwall’s Fletcher is having his best season so far and leads with 19 goals scored, while Peter-Lee Vassell, who missed the first four games of the season, scored five times in the Inter-zone round and had nine goals overall.
Shawn Bradford, Nazime Matalie and Leonardo Fogarthy are the men who will carry the scoring responsibility for Rusea’s High as they seek to get to the last four of the national competition.
