Dinthill part company with coach ‘Sense’ Williams
LINSTEAD, St Catherine — A new coach will be in charge this afternoon when former champions and pre-season favourites Dinthill Technical open their account in the quarter-finals of the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition against Lennon High in the first game of a double-header set to start at 1:00 pm at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes, Clarendon.
The Dinthill Technical management team yesterday confirmed that Kevin “Sense” Williams had been fired over incidents unrelated to football in Montego Bay over the weekend.
Up to late yesterday, efforts to find out the identity of the replacement was met with requests for patience as the management team sorted out themselves.
Everton Burke, a member of the team’s management group, yesterday confirmed to the Jamaica Observer that Williams was asked to step down form the position he only accepted earlier this year, but declined to go into any further details, saying only that the decision “had nothing to do with football or his coaching abilities”.
Burke told the Observer there was “an incident following the (FLOW Super Cup game against Bridgeport High) in Montego Bay Boy last Friday and the decision was taken then”.
Despite dominating the game, Dinthill Technical lost the Super Cup game 0-1 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, their first blemish all season after winning all 12 games played in the daCosta Cup up to then — one of two teams with perfect win records in the entire island.
Williams, who has had experience at other schools, including his alma mater Clarendon College, and in the Red Stripe Premier League with Sporting Central Academy, took over the programme this year after Anthony Patrick led them to the final last year, losing 0-1 to St Elizabeth Technical High School, also at the Montego Bay Sports Complex.
It was not smooth sailing for Patrick last year as after the team got off to a smooth start, unbeaten in their first six games, he hit the skids and he was removed, but later returned and led the team to the deciding game.
