Draw good enough for Vere to book Super Cup spot
HAYES, Clarendon — A draw would be sufficient for Vere Technical High in their Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association/FLOW daCosta Cup Inter-zone game against Glenmuir High at the Wembley Centre of Excellence in Hayes, Clarendon, to qualify for the lucrative Flow Super Cup competition that starts tomorrow afternoon.
Match time is 2:00 pm.
The game will be a continuation of the original fixture that was called off on Saturday due to bad weather and a waterlogged field at Juici Field, and according to organisers the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA), only players who were on the match card on Saturday will be eligible for the game today.
Kemps Hill and Garvey Maceo will meet in a game of academic interest at Juici Field.
Also today, first-time qualifiers Steer Town High will seek to join another first-timer, Little London, in advancing from the Inter-zone round when they take on Brimmervale High as they seek to take the runner-up spot in Zone Six behind Dinthill Technical.
Seven schools have already secured their places in the Super Cup knockout competition from the daCosta Cup competition, while two more places will be decided for the quarter-final as the Inter-zone round ends with three games today.
Three schools are tied on four points in Zone Seven on four points each, with Vere Technical ahead on goal difference. Seaforth High, meantime, have zero goal difference and Bog Walk High have a minus three goal difference.
Despite being on one point, Glenmuir High are not out of the running for at least a quarter-final place, but must beat Vere Technical by at least two clear goals.
Patrick “Jackie” Walters’ young team finished second in their first round to Garvey Maceo and has struggled in the Inter-zone scoring once and were beaten on Tuesday by Seaforth High.
Vere, on the other hand, have been enjoying one of their best seasons in years, and in addition to trying to qualify for the Super Cup for the second-straight year, they could make a run at the top four in the daCosta Cup.
In Zone Six, Steer Town will have their work cut out for them as they have to win big to take over second place from Port Antonio High, who are comfortable on four points and have a goal difference of four.
Brimmervale have not shown much quality in defence, however, and have conceded nine goals, the most in the Inter-zone so far.
