All set for 3rd ultra-rich Super Cup KO
Defending Manning Cup champions Jamaica College and former daCosta Cup champions Clarendon College will highlight eight enthralling encounters in the first round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW Super Cup, as 16 teams will begin their hunt for supremacy this weekend.
The games will be hosted at Catherine Hall Sports Complex in St James and Sabina Park in Kingston, as both venues will be buzzing with energy and excitement as the top eight Manning Cup teams go up against their top eight daCosta Cup counterparts.
The details of the first round, which will see games being played tomorrow and Saturday, as well as the new trophy were revealed during a live television broadcast grand draw event at the National Indoor Sports Centre yesterday.
Carlo Redwood, FLOW’s vice-president of marketing and television, said he was expecting some fierce battles in the four-week-long competition dubbed the “Champions League of Schoolboy Football”.
“This is the first time we have done this type of a draw; it was a one-hour TV special, we thought that it was different; it was like Champions League draw and we are excited about what it would have created in terms of the buzz that is now out there about the kick-off weekend,” Redwood told the strong>Jamaica Observer.
“In terms of the match-ups, we see a lot of fantastic games in store when you look at the Denham Town against Cornwall College and Little London against Wolmer’s and the others, they are all very intriguing, so whether you end up at Catherine Hall or Sabina Park you are going to be in for high quality and exciting football,” he added.
Catherine Hall, St James, will host a St Catherine derby of Bridgeport High versus Dinthill Technical, along with the Denham Town versus rural powerhouse Cornwall College tomorrow. On Saturday at the same venue, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) will battle 2014 finalists Holy Trinity, and Rusea’s versus debutants Haile Selassie.
Over at Sabina Park tomorrow, Excelsior High will battle Ocho Rios High, while Wolmer’s Boys’ will oppose Little London. On Saturday, Kingston College will square off against Glenmuir High or Vere Technical, as those two teams will meet in a decisive encounter today. As a result of that, the FLOW Super Cup game which was originally scheduled for Friday had to be pushed back to Saturday.
Meanwhile, 2014 champions Jamaica College and Clarendon College will contest the other fixture on Saturday.
The telecommunications firm has invested over $2 million in prize money to the knockout tournament.
In addition to the new FLOW Super Cup trophy to be unveiled this season will be the introduction of the FLOW Super Cup MVP Award to be presented in memory of late St George’s College captain Dominic James. James was the only winner of the two FLOW Super Cup trophies playing for Jamaica College and St George’s College.
The new MVP award will be the second individual award up for grabs, joining the ‘Golden Boot’ award which is complemented by a scholarship grant of $100,000.
The ISSA/FLOW Super Cup final will take place on November 12 at the National Stadium.
