Top Manning Cup coaches expecting stronger Dacosta Cup challenge
With a new champion set to be crowned in this year’s staging of the lucrative Inter-Secondary Schools sports Association (ISSA) FLOW Super Cup, coaches from top Manning Cup contenders are anticipating a competitive campaign from their daCosta Cup counterparts.
Miguel Coley, coach of 2014 champions Jamaica College, in his outlook of the tournament, believes that they “have a great chance of winning once more. The rural area teams have been improving in terms of their playing and some rural teams have been camping in the urban area in order to expose and improve their football, so I expect them to be even more competitive and we are looking forward to some good match- ups,” said Coley.
Head Coach of Wolmer’s Boys’ Vassel Reynolds shared a similar sentiment.
“I think over the past two years, the Manning Cup teams would have shown that we are a step above the daCosta Cup teams, but I think somehow the rural teams will be better prepared this time around.
“So I expect a better competition from previous years and we will assess our weaknesses and strengths to surely get better prepared for the Super Cup competition coming up,” Reynolds noted.
Coach Ludlow Bernard also fancies the chances of his inform Kingston College team.
“It is a good competition and we are looking forward to it. The competitiveness of the Super Cup is a good one and we fancy our chances. It is nice for us to be playing against some of the rural teams, so I think it is a fantastic competition and, of course, it should help to showcase our talent,” Bernard stated.
The trio will be joined by Holy Trinity, Excelsior High, Denham Town, Haile Selassie and Bridgeport from the Manning Cup in the ‘Champions League of Schoolboy Football’ competition.
The winner will once again take home a grand prize of $1 million, while all participating schools will have the opportunity to win cash for school development, which will be determined by their progression from each round.
Also, in addition to the new Super Cup trophy to be unveiled, this season will see the introduction of the Super Cup MVP Award to be presented in memory of late St George’s College captain Dominic James.
James was the only winner of the two Super Cup trophies playing for Jamaica College and St George’s College.
The new MVP award will be the second individual award up for grabs, joining the Golden Boot award, and is complemented by a scholarship grant of $100,000.
The ISSA/FLOW Super Cup final will take place on November 12 at the National Stadium.
