Dacosta Cup teams turn up heat in Super Cup hunt
MONTEGO BAY, St James — At least seven of the eight qualifiers from the daCosta Cup competition for the third staging of the lucrative Flow Super Cup competition will be decided this afternoon as the third and final round of games in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup Inter-zone are contested.
The winners of the eight Inter-zone groups will be paired against the top-eight schools in the Corporate Area’s Manning Cup competition at Wednesday’s draw for the lucrative all-island competition that gets underway on Friday.
Five teams — daCosta Cup champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) from Zone Three, Cornwall College in Zone One, Rusea’s High in Zone Two, Ocho Rios in Zone Five and Dinthill Technical in Zone Six — have won their first two games in the Inter-zone round and have already qualified for the quarter-finals and need only a point to secure wins and qualify for the Super Cup.
Two other spots will come from Zone Four where Clarendon College and Spalding High are tied on four points, separated by goal-difference and Zone Eight where Paul Bogle High and Little London are also tied on four points each.
Meanwhile, teams will also be vying for quarter-final spots as the top two from each group will earn qualification to the next round.
Green Island and Petersfield could join Cornwall College from Zone One, Spot Valley need a draw from Rusea’s in Zone Two to make progress, while the winner of the Lennon High vs Holmwood Technical game will join STETHS. A draw would favour Lennon, while either Alston High or Fair Prospect could advance from Zone Five.
The race will be for the Super Cup spots, however, and after two tough games, STETHS should be able to get the point from Mile Gully that would see them into their third-straight Super Cup.
With a goal-difference of nine, it would take a massive upset to deny Cornwall College in Zone One and they will take on Green Island, who are coming off a win over Cedric Titus and will be battling Petersfield for second place.
Unbeaten Cornwall, who will be going for their 13th-straight win this season, should be led by Peter-Lee Vassell who leads the Inter-zone goal scoring with four, snatching two goals in each of their last two games and will be hunting goals along with Jourdaine Fletcher who has scored two goals.
Rusea’s High have done just enough, winning both games by 1-0 margins and a draw today against Spot Valley High at Jarrett Park would see them through to their first Super Cup berth.
Ocho Rios have been a surprise so far with wins over St Mary Technical and Fair Prospect and could make it to the Super Cup in their first trip to the Inter-zone in over five years.
Today they will face Alston High who also have a shot at winning the zone and advancing with a two-goal margin win.
Dinthill Technical have cooled off their high-scoring ways and gave up two goals on Saturday against Steer Town and will face Brimmervale, who also have ambitions of advancing to the next stage.
Clarendon College were held by Spalding on Saturday and the two are now tied on four points. Clarendon play Lacovia High today, while Spalding will have their hands full against Manchester High away.
Manchester revived their hopes with a win over Lacovia on Saturday and they too will have ambitions of a quarter-final spot with a win.
Little London High have been the surprise package so far and lead Zone Eight on goals scored over Paul Bogle with whom they are tied on four points and identical goal-difference of one.
A point would be good enough for either Little London or Paul Bogle to advance ahead of the more fancied Garvey Maceo and Kemps Hill.
Little London will play Kemps Hill at Juici Field, while at Lynch Park, Paul Bogle face a Garvey Maceo team still smarting from their loss to Little London, their first this season.
Meanwhile, Zone Seven is still up for grabs after the Vere Technical vs Glenmuir game was rained out on Saturday and they could be made to wait until Thursday when the rescheduled games are most likely to be played to know who will advance.
Bog Walk lead with four points and a win over Vere would see them take at least a quarter-final spot, while Seaforth and Glenmuir will battle for the other spot.
