Lennon book Inter-zone spot by blanking Clarendon College
MOCHO, Clarendon — Two-time finalists Lennon High qualified for the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition by beating former champions Clarendon College 2-0 in the rescheduled Zone H first-round game played in Mocho yesterday.
The loss was Clarendon’s first this season, but saw Lennon High just edge Thompson Town by one point as the Merron Gordon-coached team finished on 16, three points behind the losers who had won the zone from last week.
Six other schools confirmed their places to take the total to 30 with another two spots still to be confirmed, and could cause some concerns for the organisers with the Inter-zone round set to start tomorrow.
Steer Town booked their first-ever spot in the Inter-Zone from Zone I after beating York Castle 3-2 to take over the lead on 17 points, but the crucial game between Brown’s Town and Ocho Rios, who are both tied on 16 points, was not played as no referees showed up.
The runners-up from Zone K are still to be decided as yesterday Ewarton beat Guys Hill 2-1 to improve to 13 points in third place with a game in hand. Dinthill Technical have won the zone with 27 points while Bog Walk are in second place with 15 points. Meanwhile, Green Island High, Petersfield High and Lacovia all booked their spots as runners-up from their respective zones, while Little London High from Pool One and Alston High from Pool Two are the best third-placed teams.
Raheem Pringle scored twice for Green Island who blanked Knockalva Technical 5-0 and take the second place in Zone B behind Rusea’s High as Kenrick Campbell, Hitola Gardner and Lascelle Mellers got the other goals.
Petersfield High defeated Maud McLeod 2-0 to beat Little London on goal difference for the runners-up spot from Zone D, both on 19 points, behind Godfrey Stewart High’s 22 points.
There was some consolation for Little London, however, as their points average of 1.9 was better than any other school in Pool I as they qualified for the Inter-zone round for the first time.
Lacovia High benefited from St Elizabeth Technical’s 1-0 win over Munro College, advancing as the runners-up with 16 points, just one more than Munro College who will miss the Inter-zone for the second time in three years.
Demar James scored for STETHS who improved to 24 points after beating their arch-rivals for the second time this season after a 2-1 first-round win.
