Baker, Chin top Couples charity golf tourney
The team of Stanten Baker and Paul Chin emerged winners of the 10th Annual Couples Resorts Negril Charity Golf Tournament after they topped a field of 56 contestants at the Negril Hills Golf Club on Sunday.
The amateur tournament was graced with bright, sunny conditions throughout the day at the picturesque venue. The event raised $1.5 million and was played in a scramble format which saw the handicaps of both team members being combined.
This accounted for a gross and a net score.
The gross is the score before it is adjusted by the handicap, while the handicap is dependent on how much one scores above or below the course’s par on a regular basis.
Baker and Chin bettered their fourth- place finish from last year when they ended with the top net score of 61.2 to finish ahead of young Sebert Walker Jr and John Dunbar, who combined for 61.5.
The pair of Glen Ross and Bill Jones (61.7) were third, with Orbin Furghason and Andrew Richards (63.5) taking fourth with a better back nine over Hugh Logan and Gerard Christ, who had an indentical score.
Meanwhile, the team of Sean Morris and John Brennan were also big winners on the day as they accumulated the best gross score of 62 with the pair of Rickardo Perry and Steve Richards (63) finishing as runners-up.
Baker credited hard work and a high level of team chemistry to their victory in what was a competitive tournament.
“We have been playing together as a team for the past four years and every year the chemistry has got better. We continue to improve on our game and we know each other’s game to a point where we came out this (Sunday) morning knowing we had a chance of winning this tournament… we have been setting small targets and as soon as we meet those targets we move the drawing board a little better further, and it has brought us success,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
Meanwhile, Chin explained that playing against the winners of last year’s tournament served as motivation when under pressure.
“This is the first time we have won the tournament and today (Sunday) we actually were playing with the winners of last year, so they had us under a little bit of pressure at the beginning. But we stuck to our strategy at the beginning as a team and it bore fruit,” Chin noted.
For six-time gross winner Morris it was good to be back in the tournament after a one-year break due to overseas obligations last year.
“I compete here for two reasons, because of the camaraderie and its significant contribution to charity. so it is good to be back in fine style because we shot 10-under par today, which is three more than what the winners scored last year.
“I am just coming back from a world tournament in Mexico so my game is pretty sharp, but with all the shortcomings that my partner had because of his lack of playing, we had a couple practice rounds and we got it together and did well today,” Morris told the
Observer.
