Six make move on Inter-zone berths
MUNRO, St Elizabeth — Six schools could add their names to the list of teams that have already secured their places in the Inter-zone round of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition as 17 rescheduled games are scheduled to be played today.
Both spots from Zone I could be decided today, while Green Island High in Zone B, Petersfield High in Zone D, former champions Munro College in Zone E, and Lennon High in Zone H will have a final shot at getting to the Inter-zone round. However, failure on their part would see others taking their place.
Additionally, Spot Valley High, who are already in the Inter-zone round, will continue their disrupted game against Holland High in Zone C which will decide the winners of the zone.
The organisers of the competition, ISSA, could have some tough decisions to make, as even if the six schools are able to book their spots, another three will have to be decided — including the two best third-placed teams and second place from Zone K — in time for the start of the Inter-zone round on Wednesday.
Twenty-three teams have already secured berths coming into today’s set of matches, and the winners and runners-up have been decided in only seven of the 15 zones.
The schools that have already secured berths in the Inter-zone round are Cornwall College, St James High and Rusea’s High from Zone B; Cedric Titus and Spot Valley from Zone C; Godfrey Stewart High from Zone D; STETHS in Zone E; Manchester High and Mile Gully in Zone F; Holmwood Technical and Spalding High in Zone G: Clarendon College in Zone H, St Mary Technical and Brimmervale from Zone J; Dinthill Technical in Zone K; Port Antonio and Fair Prospect in Zone L; Garvey Maceo and Glenmuir in Zone M; Vere Technical and Kemps Hill in Zone N; and Seaforth High and Paul Bogle in Zone O.
Today, three schools will be battling for the two automatic spots from Zone I with a clash between Brown’s Town and Ocho Rios holding the key.
Both are on 16 points with Ocho Rios just ahead on goal difference, while Steer Town, who are seeking their first Inter-Zone berth, are on 14 points and will face York Castle who are out of contention.
