Six more schools qualify for daCosta Cup Inter-zone
SPOT VALLEY, St James — Six more schools, led by former champions Godfrey Stewart High, qualified for the Inter-zone round of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition after yesterday’s final round of scheduled games in the return round.
As a result, 23 of the 32 spots have been filled.
There are still no qualifiers from Zone I with four schools separated by two points.
Ocho Rios High jumped two places from third to first on goal-difference over Brown’s Town, with a 6-0 drubbing of Aabuthnott Gallimore High to be on 16 points, who were held 0-0 by York Castle.
Steer Town stayed on pace for their first Inter-zone qualification while ending Marcus Garvey’s season with a 3-1 win to move to 14 points with a game in hand. Marcus Garvey finished their first round with 15 points and will not advance for the first time in four years.
Cedric Titus got the point they needed from a 1-1 draw at home to Herbert Morrison Technical, and will be joined by Cedric Titus, who beat William Knibb Memorial 3-0 with goals from Rogwayne Thompson, Courtney Chisholm and Reno Edmondson.
Cedric Titus are on 19 points, while Spot Valley are three points behind, but with a game in hand against Holland High.
Godfrey Stewart won Zone D with a 2-0 win over Maud McLeod as Noel McKenzie scored both goals to help them finish with 22 points.
Petersfield revived their hopes by beating second-placed Little London 1-0 to move to 16 points, three behind the losers, with a game in hand.
After earning just two points from their first four games, St Mary Technical amassed 16 from their next six, including three in their 1-0 win over Tacky High yesterday to top Zone J with 18 points.
Brimmer Vale took second place on 16 points after a 2-0 win over Horace Clarke High.
Garvey Maceo High won Zone M while conceding a single goal in 10 games after blanking Denbigh High 4-0 with Gavin Roberts scoring all four goals to take his tally to 14 on the season.
Garvey Maceo finished with 28 points, three more than Glenmuir High, who beat Winston Jones 4-0, with Jevaun Ennis scoring a hat-trick to take his scoring tally to 19.
Cornwall College beat Maldon High 6-2 as they won all 10 games in Zone A for the first time with Aiden Jocomba and Jourdaine Fletcher both scoring doubles.
Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) won Zone E after Munro College were beaten 1-0 by Lacovia High and will have to wait for their rescheduled game against STETHS to confirm their place in the next round.
STETHS are on 21 points, five more than Lacovia, while Munro are a point back.
Manchester High won Zone F after beating second-placed Mile Gully High 2-0. Holmwood Technical won Zone G with a 3-1 win over Christiana, while Spalding beat May Day 2-0.
Clarendon College won their seventh-straight game beating Thompson Town 4-0, while Lennon High beat Edwin Allen 5-0 to move to 13 points, two behind Thompson Town, but must beat Clarendon College to take second place.
Dinthill Technical won their ninth game, staying perfect with a 4-0 win over Ewarton.
Vere Technical wrapped up Zone N honours with a 3-1 win over Central High, as Kemps Hill also advanced with a 3-1 win over Bustamante High.
Seaforth High won Zone O after a 2-0 win over fellow qualifiers Paul Bogle High.
