True Whisper revels in wet conditions
The script was not the one that most punters expected, especially after installing first-time runnerFearless Samurai as the overwhelming 1/9 favourite in the six-furlong two-year-old maiden special race yesterday at Caymanas Park.
Indeed, Fearless Samurai who has been blazing the track at exercise in the mornings, had to submit to his less fancied stablemate, True Whisper, and outsider Flowers Thirty, only managing to finish third, three lengths behind the winner. Both True Whisper and Fearless Samurai are trained by Wayne DaCosta.
True Whisper, who was racing for the second time, got the job done with the first time use of Lasix. The winning time recorded under very wet conditions was 1:15.3.
It was obvious when the horses were loading that Fearless Samurai was a problematic sort, seemingly not liking the wet track. He gave trouble to enter and settle in the gates, with jockey Omar Walker having to leave the saddle on at least two occasions. When the race got underway, True Whisper with Jerome Innis went to the front with Flowers Thirty following and Fearless Samurai behind.
The battle up front continued when they entered the straight, and which stage Fearless Samurai was swerving around, and only found a rhythm in the final half a furlong of the race. The duel involving True Whisper and Flowers Thirty ended with the former getting home by half a length with Flowers Thirty another length and a quarter ahead of Fearless Samurai.
“The time wasn’t that great; I mean 1:15.3 minutes on a muddy track isn’t anything great.
“It is hard to say how good she (True Whisper) is because of the muddy track; maybe she likes the mud or maybe she doesn’t like the mud, we have to wait and see.
“I really don’t know what went wrong with Fearless Samurai as yet.
“So far we can blame it on the muddy conditions, but sometimes you make excuses for these horses and they are not what they are touted up to be.
“For sure I will be looking towards the Cash Pot race coming up shortly, and I am happy that I have a few options at this time, and who knows, True Whisper might be one of them,” DaCosta commented at the end of the race.
