GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Members of the main opposition People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Tuesday staged a protest outside the Ministry of the Presidency calling on the David Granger government to appoint the Local Government Commission.

“Two wrongs don’t make a right,” PPP Executive Secretary Zulficar Mustapha told reporters when reminded of his party’s delay in appointing the Commission while it was in office.

Mustapha said Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan had promised to set up the commission by September 30 and that the PPP has already named its representatives and will not tolerate any further delay.

Right now Bulkan is usurping that authority and we believe the government wants to control local government. They fought for this while in opposition and now they should appoint it,” he said, adding that the protests would continue until a commission is appointed.

In 2014, Granger, then opposition leader staged similar protests outside the Office of the President calling on the Donald Ramotar government to operationalise the Local Government Commission Bill.
