d’Cup deciders
RAMBLE, Hanover – The qualifiers for the inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition from western Jamaica will be decided between today and Monday, when the return round ends.
Ten games across all four zones will be played today with another 10 set for Saturday, while three rescheduled games are down for Monday.
At least eight of the 32 qualifiers for the Inter-zone round will come from the four western zones, with the top two in each zone sure of advancing, while one other could get one of the two best third-place finishes.
So far, Cornwall College and Rusea’s High, who have combined for 21 liens on the trophy, have made progress. Cornwall College lead Zone A with 24 points from their eight straight wins, while Rusea’s High are on 11 points in Zone B and with a game to go against Knockalva Technical in Ramble today, can only be passed by one of two teams.
Four more schools could secure their spots today – St James High with a win over Irwin at Jarrett Park; Cedric Titus High with a win over William Knibb Memorial in Zone C, while both Godfrey Stewart High and Little London could qualify from Zone D with some help from Grange Hill.
Cornwall College will need only a point from their last two games to win the zone, while Rusea’s, coming off a 0-0 draw at home to Frome Technical on Saturday, should have enough firepower to get the better of Knockalva who have conceded 28 goals, the most by any western team so far this season.
Saturday’s game between Frome and Green Island could determine who takes the second spot as Frome will only need a point from that game to advance.
Despite playing in Zone C for the first time since they started participating in the competition, Cedric Titus looks to be the class of the group and a win against William Knibb today would see them home and dry.
Spot Valley, who face the possibility of losing points after using a player who got a red card in their first game, but did not miss a game, are in second place on 12 points, will play Muschett High, while third placed Herbert Morrison, still battling to save their season, host Holland High.
Godfrey Stewart High, who just missed qualifying for the Inter-zone round last year, and Little London, who prior to this season had last won a game in the competition in 2012, are tied at the top of Zone D on 16 points.
Godfrey Stewart will face neighbours and third placed Manning’s School – 11 points – while Little London host Maud McLeod.
Wins for the leaders and anything but a win for Petersfield against Grange Hill, would see Godfrey Stewart, the 2005 champions and Little London, advance.
