Four advance on Matthew ruined day in Dacosta Cup
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — Four more schools, including former champions Dinthill Technical and Garvey Maceo, progressed to the Inter-zone round of the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/FLOW daCosta Cup in yesterday’s round of games that saw seven matches postponed.
Six schools have now secured their places in the next round after former winners Dinthill Technical and Garvey Maceo, along with Manchester High and Mile Gully, joined Cornwall College and Vere Technical, who had advanced earlier.
The impending arrival of hurricane Matthew, the Jamaica Observer was told, contributed to the postponements as schools had started sending home students ahead of the storm.
The clash between defending champions St Elizabeth Technical and Munro College was among those affected.
Meanwhile, Cornwall College ran their record to eight straight after blanking St James High 2-0 at the Montego Bay Sports Complex, while Clarendon College won their seventh-straight game in Zone H.
Alwayne Harvey scored his ninth goal of the season, while Andre Fletcher, Kaheem Parris, Jahmani Ranger and Kimani Pryce scored one each as Dinthill Technical won their seventh-straight game, beating Charlemont High 5-0 to win Zone K and advance.
Despite being held 0-0 by Glenmuir High and dropping their first points of the season, breaking their seven-game win streak, Garvey Maceo took the first automatic spot from Zone M as they improved to 22 points. Glenmuir are in second place on 19 points and have to wait until the next game to book their place.
Manchester High and Mile Gully scored big wins as they took both places in Zone F, locked on 22 points each.
Brandon Brown scored twice for Manchester High as they beat BB Coke 4-0 with Ajay Chin and Kamar White scoring one each.
Javel Coley scored four times for Mile Gully taking his tally to eight of the season as Mile Gully hammered Cross Keys High 7-0.
Jourdaine Fletcher scored twice for Cornwall College as they beat St James High 2-0 to sweep the Zone A series for the first time since 2014 and stretched the win streak to an unprecedented eight straight.
With Green Pond beating Anchovy High 2-1, St James High must beat Irwin in their next game to progress further.
Tristan Warren scored both goals as Cedric Titus High avenged their first-round loss to Spot Valley High, winning 2-0 in their Zone C game to take control of the lead on 17 points, five more than Spot Valley High.
Godfrey Stewart High and Little London increased their lead in Zone D to five points after they drew 0-0 in Savanna-la-Mar and stay tied on 16 points each, ahead of third-placed Manning’s School who upset Petersfield High 3-0, avenging their first-round loss by the same margin.
Holmwood Technical are back on top of Zone G with a 2-0 win over Spalding, who had beaten them in the first round and are on 18 points, while Alston High joined Spalding on 16 points after a 3-0 win over May Day High.
Clarendon College came from a goal down to beat Lennon High 2-1 in Zone H, with goals from Ricardo McIntosh and Chevon Bryan, their seventh win on the trot.
The top-three teams in Zone J are separated by three points as, despite losing 2-1 to St Mary Technical, St Mary high lead with 14 points, followed by Brimmervale on 13 after edging Tacky High 2-1, with St Mary Technical a point back.
Vere Technical moved to within touching distance of taking Zone N honours after their 4-0 win over Old Harbour to move to 22 points, while Kemps Hill will have to wait one more game to book their Inter-zone spot after being held 1-1 by Central High.
Paul Bogle High are a point behind leaders Seaforth High, who have 18 points after their 11-0 demolition of Yallahs High in Zone O.
