12 hunt D’Cup Inter-zone berths in loaded schedule today
MUNRO, St Elizabeth — Twelve more schools, including defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS), could join Cornwall College and Vere Technical in the Inter-zone round of the ISSA/Flow daCosta Cup schoolboys’ football competition as return-round action continues today with a packed schedule of 34 games.
Even with the imminent arrival of Hurricane Matthew, the teams are still on the hunt for valuable points and the stage has been set for some fireworks before the rain and winds associated with the weather system are scheduled to hit the eastern end of the island between late Sunday evening and Monday morning.
Port Antonio High will confirm their place even without playing in Zone L as any result between Titchfield and Fair Prospect will see them advancing to the second round.
St James High in Zone A, both Rusea’s High and Frome Technical in Zone B, STETHS in Zone E, Manchester High and Mile Gully in Zone F, St Mary High in Zone J, Dinthill Technical in Zone K, Garvey Maceo High and Glenmuir from Zone M and Kemps Hill in Zone N can all secure their places in the 32 teams that will progress to the next stage of the competition.
Included in the fixtures are some derby games that will have added attractions as Cornwall College face St James High at the Montego Bay Sports Complex starting at 4:00pm; STETHS at Munro College; Holmwood Technical against Spalding for the lead in Zone G and Garvey Maceo against Glenmuir in Zone M.
Cornwall College will take their seven-game win streak into the game against the young St James High team that boasts 11 players who are 17 years old and younger and has been bolstered by the return of Calwayne Allen from duties with the National Under-17 team.
Their 0-3 loss to Cornwall last Saturday at Jarrett Park will still be fresh in the minds of the St James team despite two wins this week and will seek to end a five-game winless run against the 11-time champions.
The big picture for St James High is advancing to the Inter-zone round and they can achieve that even with a loss if third-placed Green Pond High fail to beat Anchovy High.
In Zone B, Frome Technical can advance if Frome beat Green Island in their game at the Frome Sports Complex. Green Island would be knocked out of contention with the already out of contention Knockalva and both Frome and Rusea’s High would progress from the four-team group and battle for the zone’s honours later.
The winner of the Zone D top-of-the-table Zone D clash between Godfrey Stewart High and Little London, both locked on 15 points, will advance, while the loser will be left to battle with Petersfield for the other spot.
Godfrey Stewart, who lead on goal difference, will seek to use home field advantage to avenge their first-round loss.
Munro College are desperately in need of some consistency and a win over STETHS today, avenging last weekend’s loss in Santa Cruz, would go a far way in boosting their hopes of avoiding missing the Inter-zone round for the second time in three seasons.
A win for STETHS, who are having an under par season, would not only secure their place in the Inter-zone, but also move to within a point of taking zone honours.
If Manchester High beat BB Coke for the second time this season and Mile Gully beat Cross Keys, both winners would advance with Mile Gully making up for missing out last season by a point.
A win for St Mary High against St Mary Technical at the Richmond Prison Farm grounds in Zone J would see them through. The other five schools would be left to battle for the other automatic spot.
St Mary High lead with 14 points, four more than Brimmervale, followed by St Mary Technical on nine points, while Iona High, Horace Clarke High and Tacky are all on seven points each.
Dinthill Technical, who will also be gunning for their seventh win in a row in Zone K, play a way to Charlemont High knowing that a win would see them through to the Inter-zone with three games still to be played.
Glenmuir High have won their last four games by an aggregate 17-0 since they were beaten 2-0 by Zone M leaders Garvey Maceo High and will go hunting revenge today at Garvey Maceo.
Garvey Maceo need only a point to advance and a draw could see both teams through in the unlikely situation that Porus High upset third-placed Denbigh.
Kemps Hill will join Vere Technical as qualifiers from Zone N with a win over Central High, while Vere will seek to stay on top when they meet Old Harbour at the Wembley Centre of Excellence.
Meanwhile, Holmwood Technical are seeking to avenge their loss to leaders Spalding High in Zone G and if they do, it would throw the zone wide open, keeping Alston High in the hunt for one of the two automatic spots.
Alston must play their part, however, and beat May Day High in the other game.
Former winners Clarendon College, who are also in the hunt for a seventh-straight win, will take their unbeaten run into their game against Lennon High and would inch closer to booking their spot in the Inter-zone round.
