CC, Dinthill, Garvey Maceo on the hunt for 6-in-a-row
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Three former champions Cornwall College, Dinthill Technical and Garvey Maceo High are all shooting for a sixth straight win today as the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition continues with 19 return-round games across seven zones.
It’s the best start for Dinthill Technical and Garvey Maceo in more than a decade, while 11-time champions Cornwall College will try to match their feat of winning all games in Zone A for the second time since 2014, when there were five teams in the group.
Dinthill Technical were expected to struggle without talismanic striker Rodave Murray, but have done better so far than when he was in the team and after beating Bog Walk 3-1 in the first round, are expected to continue winning today.
Garvey Maceo, who won their only title in 2007 and were the beaten finalists three years ago, have grabbed Zone M by the scruff of the neck with 15 unanswered goals and should beat Porus High again after their first round 1-0 victory.
Cornwall College are also leading with defence, having conceded one goal in five games played and face an Anchovy team that they outclassed 4-0 in their opening game.
The Dr Dean Weatherly-coached team has been strengthened with the return of National Under-20 midfielder Peter-Lee Vassell, who scored twice in his first game, a 3-0 win over a young St James High team on Saturday.
Defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High School will hope to rediscover their scoring touch when they play away to Black River, who they had thumped 10-1 in their opening game, and despite winning three more games since, have only scored four goals in the process.
They are coming off a big morale-boosting win over long-time rivals Munro College on Saturday and their tails will be up.
Manchester High and Mile Gully will continue their close battle in Zone F, taking on Cross Keys and deCarteret College, respectively, after scoring contrasting wins in the first round.
Manchester High had won 5-1, while Mile Gully won 1-0 and both are tied on 13 points, separated only by goal difference.
