Jamaica to compete in WATC in Mexico
Two years ago, Ian Facey, Sean Morris and Jonathan Newnham participated in the World Amateur Team Championships in Japan. Fast-forward to 2016 and Jamaica are represented in that event, this time in Mexico. The World Amateur Team Championships and the World Amateur Golf Council evolved in 1957 from a proposal the US Golf Association received to consider a team match between the USA and Japan. Since 1958, this team competition has taken place every two years and brings together the best players worldwide to compete for the Eisenhower Trophy.
Currently, the Jamaicans are tied in 58th position with Qatar and Serbia. On day one and two, Sean Morris had scores of 78 and 73, Jonathan Newnham had rounds of 84 and 77, while Ian Facey shot 86 and 85. The tournament is being played on two courses, the Mayakaba El Camaleon and Iberostar Paraiso, with the former being the more challenging of the two, featuring narrow fairways with trouble waiting on both sides for the errant golfer.
Over 70 countries are vying for the top honours in this prestigious event hosted by the International Golf Federation. Australia are the current leaders, with the United States and Switzerland in second and third positions, respectively. The tournament ends tomorrow.
