Rushane Campbell — blogger, fashionisto, law student
We’re always on the look out for TEENS and young adults making waves and so, naturally, we caught up with lifestyle blogger and law student Rushane Campbell, aka ‘RushCam’ not so long ago. We talked about his passion for fashion, blogging and what it takes to look your best.
Check out the interview below after some
teenAGE casual questions (TCQs):
TCQ1: If you could have any super power what would it be?
Rushane: Um…..to be invisible. Yeah.
TCQ2: What’s the most trouble you’ve ever been in with your parents?
Rushane: One time I went to this party and I was supposed to be home at 11. I’m like, ‘Yes, killin’ it’ and I don’t know what happened but eventually I got home at like four. I disrespected them – they didn’t even want to send me to the party in the first place either. I never went to another party for a year and it was just a mess.
TCQ3:
Which of these kids were you in high school: the popular kid, the nerd or just a part of the crowd?
Rushane: I was not just a part of the crowd. I think I was popular…yeah, I was.
TCQ4: What’s the most teenAGE thing you do on a daily basis?
Rushane: This is going to be so embarrassing but….check my face for pimples. That’s a very teenAGE thing.
teenAGE: Why did you get into lifestyle blogging?
Rushane: Because there was a serious gap in terms of opportunities to see what to do for Caribbean men. So, first of all, in the Caribbean we don’t have a lot of blogs. It seems to be somewhat of an American or European thing. We don’t like to write, we don’t like to read, we don’t like to have to put out a lot of effort in what we wear. That’s number one. Number two is: men in the Caribbean are not into the whole style and lifestyle thing, but I am very interested in it so I thought I’d just bring it to life and provide a source for normal guys. Because not everyone’s going to dress up all the time but normal guys need to know what to do and I thought I could be that source [of information and inspiration] for people.
teenAGE: Did you think your blog RushCamStyle would be this big when you started out?
Rushane: No. It was a hobby and I just told myself if I only had two readers plus myself I’d be fine, even if I had no readers besides myself I’d be fine. I just liked taking pictures, I never imagined I’d start getting invites to events or that I’d get recognised by people when I go out.
teenAGE: How did you get your start?
Rushane: When I was in high school I had a tumblr blog called ‘The Smoking Jacket’ and I eventually realised it was a hot mess. So I took a break and I thought I’d never go back to blogging, but I ended up spending my last six months while working on my degree in Barbados doing intense research. It was about a lot of preparation to know which platform to use and to figure out which aesthetic I wanted. It was a lot of research and trial and error. What people don’t know is whatever they see now on my page was probably drafted three months before and has to be edited again and again until I’m ready to show it to the public.
teenAGE: You’re building a brand, maintaining a blog, you have a great Instagram aesthetic and you’re a student – a Law student at that – how do you manage all that?
Rushane: I actually wasn’t managing for a while but I began to understand the importance of planning and writing things down. I have a book that’s just for blogging, so if I’m sitting around and I have an idea it goes in there. Then for school I have to be constantly working, working, working; so I write down those assignments as well. Keeping up appearances on Instagram means you have to know what you want and you have to be very focused. I used to make opportunities out of even the most random things; if I saw something and it was pretty I’d take a picture of it. It’s about seeing beautiful things and remembering what you’re about at all times.
teenAGE: What’s your closet staple?
Rushane: That’s kind of hard. But if I have to choose I’d say you must have a good fitting pair of jeans.
teenAGE: What’s your favourite fashion season?
Rushane: Definitely Summer. Summer and spring – that’s all we have in Jamaica, and I love the colours. But if we had real seasonal differences I’d say winter; I love layering.
teenAGE: In your opinion, what’s the most important fashion tip ever?
Rushane: Make it fit; you can have literally four pieces of clothes in your closet and because they are well-fitted you look great and they’ll always look good on you. It’s about making sure that the things you wear fit your body and that they’re not too tight or too loose or too shabby but sit on your body just right. And remember your body type….and lastly, always be yourself.
teenAGE: What’s your personal style?
Rushane: I’d say it’s simple but elegant. I don’t think I’m one of those super eccentric dressers but it’s very neat and polished.
