SOS Village pair captures boys 18-and-under Douglas Burke Invitational Tennis Doubles title
Miguel Rose and Alex Rose from the SOS Village Montego Bay captured the inaugural staging of the 2016 Supligen/Serge Island Douglas Burke Invitational Tennis Doubles title at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Sunday.
Seeded at number two, Miguel and Alex Rose, who are not related, defeated the unseeded pair of Carlos Wilson and Milton Rose 6-3 in the final.
Meanwhile, the victors had beated the pair of Jonathan Golding and Mario Campbell 6-4 in semi-final action, while the other semi-final saw Rose and Wilson upsetting the top pair of Damani Cain and Joshua Greaveny 6-4 to reach the final.
The elated winning pair will be looking to repeat in the next tournament scheduled to be held on November 5 and 6 at the same venue.
In the girls’ 18-and-under final, the top-seeded doubles pair of Michaela Stephens and Shea-Ann Kameka defeated the second-seeded pair of Selena Blythe and Kobi Wilcott 6-2 to win the title.
Stephens and Kameka were ruthless in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. In the semi-finals they crushed the pair of Kailey Chin and Giselle Sang 6-0, and in the quarter-finals they produced the same 6-0 score against the pair of Rea Black and Anchal Kemiani.
“We are hoping to come away with another doubles title at the next tournament scheduled this coming November,” said Stephens.
“It was very nice and good to have won as both of us played extremely well. The tournament was very competitive and well organised,” Kameka added.
The boys’ 14-and-under doubles final was won by the top pair of Cole McNair and Daniel Azar, who defeated the second-seeded pair of Kevon’dre Clarke and Delano Reeves 6-2.
In their respective semi-finals, McNair and Azar crushed Jason Duval and Alex Chin 6-0, while Clarke and Reeves beat the pair of Ryan Muir and Joshua Graveney 6-4.
Meanwhile, the Girls Open Dot Ball (half-court), which had the biggest number of participants, produced an upset as the unseeded pair of Britanya Bennett and Genesis Johnson defeated the top-seeded pair of Jessica Gentles and Alessi Freckleton 6-4 in the final.
In their semi-finals, Bennett and Johnson got past Anya Evans and Nia Scott 6-5, while Freckleton and Johnson defeated Shenelle Dale and Geossicia Madden 6-2.
The girls’ 12-and-under doubles title was won by the unseeded pair of Courtney Spencer and Alica Pearman who defeated the second-seeded pair of Thandie Sampson and Eva Pinchas 6-1 in the final
Spencer and Pearman had upset the top pair of Destiny Duncan and Gabriella Steele with a close 6-5 win, while Sampson and Pinchas defeated Kalila Morris and Gabriella Christian 6-1 in their respective semi-finals.
The boys’ 12-and-under Dot Ball was won by the doubles pair of Joshua Haye and Matthew Wright, who defeated Christopher Crighton and Matthew Crighton in the final.
Milan Russell and Miah Francis beat Connor Bennett and Becjahne Maye to win the final of the Unisex (mixed boys and girls) Dot Ball final.
