Vere, Paul Bogle go 4-straight in daCosta Cup
HAYES, Clarendon — Former champions Vere Technical and Paul Bogle High became the first schools to win four-straight games with wins in the first round of the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboys’ football competition yesterday.
Vere Technical got the better of Kemps Hill 1-0 in their Zone N top-of-the-group clash at the Wembley Centre of Excellence, while Paul Bogle High blanked Robert Lightbourne High 3-0 in Zone O as both rushed to 12 points and in control of their groups.
Former champions Garvey Maceo High turned the tables on another former winner, beating Glenmuir High 2-0 in Zone M while defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) led six teams to their third wins each.
At Wembley, former national Under-16 captain, Shandel Senior, scored for Vere Technical in their win over Kemps Hill to avenge a home loss last year.
Fancyhue Stewart, Odaine Marriott and Rojay Hamilton got on the score sheet for Paul Bogle High as they handed Robert Lightbourne back-to- back losses after they started the season with successive wins.
At Glenmuir, the home team were beaten by Garvey Maceo High for the first time in years, as Jermaine Muirhead and Joshua Newman both scored in a win that gave them sole ownership of Zone M.
In their first game of the season at the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex the defending champions scored their second-successive 1-0 win, edging Maggotty High 1-0 as Jovoney Brown scored in his third-straight game.
STETHS however suffered a big loss as Romeo Wright was stretchered off early in the game with a leg injury.
In Montego Bay, Cornwall College came from an early goal down to beat Green Pond High 2-1 and stretched their winning run to three games.
Jourdaine Fletcher came back from a red card suspension to score both goals for the home team, both coming late in either half after Shavon Duncan had given Green Pond the lead after three minutes.
St James High also won their third game in Zone A, blanking Irwin high 4-0 at Irwin with action from Tyrique Clarke, Ewan Barton, Kemani Pennington, and an own goal.
Holmwood Technical went on a goal spree, beating May Day high 9-0 as Yakime Thomas scored a hat-trick while Reynardo Barrett and Rajhaun Walcott both scored two each.
Kimani Pryce got both goals for Dinthill Technical in their 2-0 win over Charlemont High in Zone K as Ewarton High also won their third game, 3-1 over Guy’s Hill High.
Central High won their second game, a big 6-0 thrashing of Tacius Golding High with Donald Rhule and David Dias scoring two goals each.
Godfrey Stewart high came back from a goal down to beat Savanna-la-Mar neighbours Manning’s School 3-1 as Alvares Coopers scored twice and Delroy Blake the other one.
Former champions Rusea’s High were 2-1 winners over Frome Technical with Leonard Fogarthy and Okeen Johnson scoring.
Zone C continues to be close as Courtney Allen scored twice in the finals three minutes to lead Spot Valley High to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Muschett High. Herbert Morrison played to their second 3-3 draw of the season, coming from two goals down to earn a point at Holland High while Cedric Titus beat Williams Knibb Memorial 2-0.
