Vere/Kemps Hill clash among 27 D’Cup matches on today
HAYES, Clarendon — Former champions Vere Technical and the fast-rising Kemps Hill High will renew one of the newest rivalries in the ISSA/FLOW daCosta Cup football competition today at the Wembley Centre of Excellence when they put their three-win records on the line in a Zone N clash set to start at 3:30 pm.
The teams, which have dominated the zone for the past three seasons, will meet to decide who will take the leadership of the group.
This is one of 27 games scheduled to complete a busy first week of the daCosta Cup in which some schools will be playing a fourth game in eight days, and three since Monday or Tuesday.
Former champions Glenmuir High and Garvey Maceo will meet in a Zone M top-of-the-table clash, Paul Bogle High are on course for a fourth straight win in Zone O, while six former champions led by defending champions St Elizabeth Technical High SChool (STETHS) are seeking to keep their winning starts intact.
At Wembley, neither school has conceded a goal in their three games played, and Vere lead on goal difference of 11 to seven and will seek to reverse a trend last year when both home teams lost to the other team.
David Duckworth and Ronaldo Thomas, who have both scored four goals so far, are expected to lead the Vere team’s attack today.
Glenmuir will host Garvey Maceo in a rivalry that has been one-sided for the past few years, with Glenmuir losing only twice in their last 10 meetings, while winning the last six.
The young Glenmuir team lead Zone M on goal difference and will start favourites to win again today.
STETHS followed up Saturday’s massive 10-1 win over Black River with a close 2-1 win over Newell High on Wednesday and will play their first game at the STETHS Sports Complex this season, hosting Maggotty High today in Zone E.
STETHS failed to beat Maggotty last year, with both games ending in draws, and the champions will hope to flex their muscles with four-goal scorers Jovoney Brown and Romeo Wright, who have scored in both games played so far.
Munro College, who drew their only game played so far, will face a dangerous Lacovia High team that has won their two games played and are coming off a 6-0 thrashing of Black River in their last game.
Paul Bogle High have won their first three games but go up against a Robert Lightbourne High team that has won their first two games before being edged 3-2 on Thursday and will be gunning to get back to winning ways.
Robert Lightbourne have never beaten Paul Bogle High, however, and have won their last six games by an aggregate of 32-2.
Former winners Frome Technical and Rusea’s High have won their first games in Zone B and while they are expected to dominate the zone, today’s game should give the fans a hint of who will take zone honours.
Cornwall College and St James High, expected to be the class of Zone A, have not conceded a goal in their two games each and will seek to extend their good starts today and win a third straight.
Cornwall have scored seven times and will host third-placed Green Pond, while St James go to Irwin High.
Cornwall College have dominated Green Pond in the last five seasons, losing only twice in 10 meetings, and meet a team that has scored just two goals in two games so far.
St James have lost a number of their top players from last year, but so far have put up two good showings, beating Maldon High and an improving Anchovy High.
Dinthill Technical, last year’s beaten finalists, and Ewarton High are also seeking a third straight win in Zone K when they take on Charlemont High and Guys Hill, respectively.
A battle is brewing in Zone C where four schools are separated by one point in the chase for two automatic places in the Inter-zone round.
Herbert Morrison Technical lead with five points after a 5-1 win over an outmatched Muschett High on Thursday, and Spot Valley and Muschett, both on four points, will meet in Wakefield.
Cedric Titus, also on four points, will go up against William Knibb Memorial, who have drawn their last two games.
