Jamaican MPs, senators on three-day visit to UK
A delegation of recently elected Members of Parliament (MPs) and senators is in the United Kingdom (UK) for a three-day visit to explore that country’s political landscape and the role of parliamentarians in a Westminster-style democracy.
The delegation includes Government MPs Dave Brown, Heroy Clarke and Zavia Mayne, and Senators Pearnel Charles Jnr and Kerensia Morrison. The Opposition members include MPs Evon Redman, Michael Stewart and Victor Wright, and Senators Sophia Fraser-Binns and Wensworth Skeffery.
The MPs will participate with their UK counterparts in sessions focusing on topics, including the management of parliament, parliamentary practice, the role of committees, and the role of backbench MPs. The visit will provide both UK and Jamaican MPs with the opportunity to share knowledge and insights into key contemporary issues, including gender equality, public standards, and the representation of minorities.
A constituency visit will take place during the week to explore the role of MPs in ensuring public outreach and the promotion of local growth and investment. The delegation is the latest in a number of events organised between the UK Parliament and the Parliament of Jamaica to sustain relations between the two countries. The two parliaments have a historically strong collaborative relationship, the UK parliamentarians last visiting Jamaica in 2009 and hosting their Jamaican counterparts in 2014.
