Robert Lightbourne shock St Thomas Tech 2-0
CATHERINE HALL, St James — Minnows Robert Lightbourne won their opening match in the Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association/FLOW daCosta Cup schoolboy football competition after beating former powerhouse St Thomas Technical 2-0 in their Zone O game at Eastern Bananas field on Saturday.
It was the first time Robert Lightbourne were beating St Thomas Technical in the daCosta Cup and it was their fifth win since they started playing in 2008.
Three of their previous four wins have come at the expense of Yallahs High, who they beat in 2008, 2010 and in the first round in 2012. They also beat Morant Bay High in 2008 when they collected seven points, their most ever in one season.
They will play Yallahs tomorrow and will hope to match their only back-to-back win ever.
Seaforth High lead on goal difference after a 5-0 drubbing of Yallahs High, while Paul Bogle High beat Morant Bay High 3-1, also in Zone O.
Meanwhile, former champions Cornwall College opened their account with a 4-0 win over Anchovy High at the Montego Bay Sports Complex on Saturday.
There were also wins for Cedric Titus High, Petersfield High and Clarendon College, among others.
Cornwall College finished the game with 10 players after Jourdaine Fletcher, who scored one of the four goals, was sent off in the 85th minute.
Two players scored their first daCosta Cup goals for Cornwall College as defender Emmanuel Campbell opened the scoring with a header from a corner in the 16th minute, while Fletcher doubled the lead with a low, hard drive into the low right-hand corner in the 38th minute.
Michael Heaven made it 3-0 when he beat Anchovy’s goalkeeper Tavari Duncan with a header in the 54th minute, while 15-year-old Garnett Hudson, playing in his first daCosta Cup game, scored in the 79th minute after replacing another 15-year-old, Aiden Jacomba.
Cedric Titus High made a winning start in Zone C, by edging Holland High 2-1 in Wakefield with goals from Javel Green and Chadrick Maxwell.
Herbert Morrison Technical came from behind three times in an exciting 3-3 draw with Spot Valley, for whom Courtney Chisholm scored twice before getting sent off.
Petersfield High, the surprise package last year when they forced their way to the quarter-finals, beat Maud McLeod 4-0 at home, avenging a loss to the eastern Westmoreland-based school from last season.
Petersfield lead Zone D on goal difference over Godfrey Stewart High, who beat Grange Hill 3-0 in a match-up between schools that missed the competition last year.
Clarendon College, a major disappointment last year, opened their account with a 5-1 beating of Knox College to take the lead in Zone H, while three teams had 1-0 victories in Zone G. Holmwood Technical beat Alston High, Spalding beat Christiana and May Day beat Bellefield.
Tacky High, who just missed qualifying for the Inter-zone round last year, lead Zone J on goal difference after beating St Mary High 2-1, while Iona High beat Brimmervale High 1-0.
