‘Frog’ Holmes, ‘Chop Chop’ Corley score wins in Guyana
Jamaican boxer Richard ‘Frog’ Holmes, who lost to American DeMarcus ‘Chop Chop’ Corley in the Wray & Nephew Contender boxing Series Featherweight title fight clash at the National Indoor Sports Centre two months ago, defeated Guyanese boxer Mark Austin on Saturday night to return to winning ways.
Also winning a title on the same card at the Giftland Mall, in Georgetown, was Corley who defeated promising Guyanese Dexter ‘The Cobra’ Gonsalves for the WBC lightweight title.
Guyanese boxing fans saw their hopes dwindle as top Jamaican middleweight boxer, Holmes, and former world light featherweight champion Corley scored contrasting wins in their respective bouts.
Holmes immediately stamped his class on the undercard by winning his bout in 25 seconds of the second round. This was after flooring his opponent twice in the first.
For this, Holmes was said to have received an immediate proposal for a title fight, and the interests involved were due to have met yesterday to possibly chisel out an arrangement for the bout.
It was the first fight for Holmes since surrendering to Corley with a badly cut right eyebrow in the seventh round of the 10-round title fight for the Wray & Nephew Contender Featherweight at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston on July 2.
Corley, the 42-year-old former world champion who weighed in at 131 lbs in the 135 lbs weight class, improved his overall ring record to 48 wins from 76 fights with 27 losses, one draw and 26 KOs.
