Dominant T&T capture five doubles titles at Caribbean Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Champs
TRINIDAD and Tobago again proved their dominance by capturing five doubles titles at the 2016 Caribbean Pre-Cadet Table Tennis Championships at the National Indoor Sports Centre (NISC) on Wednesday.
Jamaica won the other doubles title ahead of Trinidad.
In the Under-13 boys’ doubles final, the Trinidad pair of Derron Douglas and Messiah Walcott defeated the Guyanese pair of Nirah Bissu and Kaysan Ninville 11-6, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9.
Trinidad also captured the Under-13 girls’ final as Rayanna Boodhan and Shreya Maharaj scored an 11-5, 11-5, 9-11, 13-11 win over the Guyanese pair of Neveah Clarkson and Abigale Martin.
The Under-11 boys’ doubles final was won by Trinidad’s pair of Nicholas O’Young and Jalen Kerr, who defeated the Jamaica pair of Dujaun Jackson and Joel Butler 11-4, 11-7, 11-6.
Liana Campbell and Kesley Davidson of Jamaica beat the pair of Priyanka Khellawan and Rebekah Sterling of Trinidad to capture the Under-11 girls’ title in five exciting sets, 11-8, 11-9, 9-11, 7-11, 11-8.
Trinidad had further success in both mixed doubles with the pair of Derron Douglas and Shreya Maharaj beating Kaysan Ninville and Abigale Martin of Guyana 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 in the Under-13 boys’ final.
Nicholas O’Young and Priyanka Khellawan of Trinidad defeated their compatriot Jalen Kerr and Brianna Solomon 11-3, 11-9, 11-6 to win the Under-11 mixed doubles final.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s coach of the Under-11 girls’ team, Richard Davidson, said he was very happy to come away with the gold medal as the players fought bravely to achieve the feat.
“It was a very hard-fought match and also an exciting one. We were up 2-0 in the match but lost the next two sets as the Trinidad drew level at 2-2,” Davidson said.
The coach noted that he was looking forward for the girls to perform well in the individual singles where they are expected also to medal.
Trinidad’s coach Dexter Abbott said he was very elated and impressed with his players’ performances.
“We just missed taking a clean sweep of all the doubles, but in the Under-11 girls’ final Jamaica managed to come out a close winner. However, Trinidad should once again show their dominance in the individual singles where the players are also very strong,” Abbott said.
Jamaica finished third in both the Under-13 boys’ and girls’ doubles, and third in the mixed doubles, while in the Under-11 boys’, they came second and fourth, while in the Under-11 girls’ they finished first and third.
The individual singles for boys’ and girls’ Under-13 and Under-11 begin today at 10:00 am.
