Seeded players through to second round of Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Tennis Championships
TOP seed Damion Johnson easily defeated unseeded Daniel Newman in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 as the 2016 Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Tennis Championships men’s singles got under way at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre, yesterday.
Also through to today’s second round are second seed Dwayne Pagon, third seed Yussuf Migoko, and fourth seed Matthew Rodriques.
Johnson, in his first round match yesterday, had little difficulty in outclassing his lesser experience opponent as he rushed through the two sets comfortably.
“I played a relaxed game just to get myself in touch by just placing my shots well so as to get well prepared for hard and tougher matches to come in the other rounds,” Johnson said.
Meanwhile, Pagon also raced through his first round match against unseeded Anthony Burgess, winning 6-1, 6-0.
“I played well, but it was too windy, but I will have to get used to the conditions. I expect as the matches progress they will get much tougher, but I will be ready for them,” Pagon said.
Migoko was fortunate to gain a walkover in his first-round match against Gerry Hunter, while Rodriques beat unseeded Ryan Cox in straight sets 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the second round.
Action continues today in the men’s singles with Johnson facing Carlos Wilson; Rodriquez taking on Orick Angus at 4:00 pm; Migoko clashing with unseeded Rushane Allen, and Pagon taking on Thaine Allen at 1:00 pm.
