Top-seed Johnson serves off against Newman in Tennis Champs
TOP-seed Damion Johnson will face unseeded Daniel Newman as the 2016 Hi-Pro All-Jamaica Tennis Championships men’s singles gets underway this morning at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre in Kingston starting at 9:00.
Johnson, who has been Jamaica’s number one men’s singles player for many years and still holds that position, should not have much difficulty in getting past his opponent and advance to the second round. His match is scheduled to start at 2:30 pm.
Meanwhile, second-seeded Dwayne Pagon, another of Jamaica’s senior players, will come up against unseeded Anthony Burgess in his first- round match and should move into the second round.
Third-seed Yussuf Migoko goes up against Gerry Hunter, while fourth-seeded Matthew Rodriques will play the winner of the Ryan Cox and Warrington Dixon match.
Other first-round matches scheduled today at 9:00 this morning are Ryan Cox vs Warrington Dixon; B Heart vs Jeremy Miller; John Yson vs Karan Chatani; Roshane Allen vs James Golding.
At 10:00 am, Milton Rose vs Myles Harrison; Dane Vernon vs Damani Cain; Ruben Pinchas vs Morris Edwards; S Wilson vs Alex Rose.
Yussuf Migoko vs Gary Hunter; Carlos Wilson vs Garth Darby; Michael Allen vs Thaine Allen at 10:00.
At 2:30 pm, Damion Johnson vs David Newman; Dwayne Pagon vs Anthony Burgess; Cliff Dwyer vs the winner of John Yson or Karan Chatani match; Matthew Rodriques vs the winner of Ryan Cox vs Warrington Dixon; Allan McNab vs John Azar; Orick Angus vs Miguel Rose; Adam Harris vs the winner of the Jeremy Miller and Bruce Heart match; Dwayne Lushing vs Mario Campbell at 4:30.
The winner of the men’s singles will receive $100,000, runner-up $60,000, two losing semi-finalists $25,000, losing quarter-finalists $15,000 each. The winner of the women’s singles will get $50,000 and the runner-up $20,000, the men’s doubles winners will each collect $20,000 each.
