Cornwall College on top in preseason football tourney
BOGUE, St James — Leaders Cornwall College need just a point in their game against Rusea’s High today to secure their place in the final of the first Herbert Morrison Technical preseason football tournament at the school’s grounds in Bogue.
Cornwall College won both games played on Wednesday’s opening day, over St James High and Herbert Morrison Technical to lead the round robin points’ table with six points.
Hosts Herbert Morrison and Rusea’s High are on three points each from one win each, while a young-looking St James High team is yet to score a point.
A draw for Cornwall College in the first game of the day at 1:30 pm would ensure their place in the final set for 5:00 pm and, even with a loss, could advance.
Cornwall have a good goal difference should it come down to the tiebreaker, having scored three times and yet to concede with a 2-0 win over St James High and a 1-0 win over Herbert Morrison.
Herbert Morrison have the edge over St James High and could contest the decider.
On Wednesday, Cornwall College opened with a 2-0 win over St James High with goals from Garnet Hudson and Dwayne Harding, then beat Herbert Morrison 1-0 with Peter-Lee Vassell scoring the lone goal.
Herbert Morrison edged Rusea’s High 1-0 in their opening game with Richard Thompson scoring, while Rusea’s beat St James High 1-0 in the other game with Leonardo Fogarthy scoring a diving header in the first half.
The competition sees the teams playing 40-minute games, a salute to the school’s 40th anniversary, according to organiser and coach of the Herbert Morrison team, Leacroft Lettman.
The teams are playing for the Lloyd Whinstanley trophy, named after the first headmaster at the school.
