Minding adds Nassau Stakes to Oaks and 1,000 Guineas triumphs
LONDON, United Kingdom (AFP) – Minding won her sixth Group One race when she triumphed in the Nassau Stakes at the Glorious Goodwood meeting in southern England on Saturday last.
Arguably the outstanding filly of her generation, the Aidan O’Brien-trained horse had already won this season’s editions of the two English Classics for female horses — The Oaks and the 1,000 Guineas.
Sent off as the 1/5 (bet five pounds to win one) odds-on favourite and ridden by top English jockey Ryan Moore, Minding struggled in the early stages of a one-mile, two-furlong race that featured just five runners, despite the £340,260 prize money on offer in one of the flagship races of Glorious Goodwood.
Minding found herself trapped behind a few of her rivals as the field turned for home on a course set within the Sussex Downs.
But once Moore switched her to the outside, Minding soon made up ground and went away in the final furlong before being eased down by her jockey to beat second-placed Queen’s Trust by a length, with French runner Jemayel third.
“It was always going to be a messy sort of race today and it was just a question of keeping it as simple as possible,” said Moore.
“Her last seven races have all been Group Ones and she’s won six of them. She’s just so classy and versatile. The ground was actually a bit loose out there and she might have preferred a slightly nicer surface.”
