Moving from 200m to 400m …Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby makes the change
After taking a year off to recover from injuries and start her married life, Anneisha McLaughlin-Whilby’s plans for this season was very clear.
She wanted 2016 to be her ‘comeback year’, meaning she would ease her way back into top-flight competition and not pressure herself to get back too quickly.
Three weeks before the Supreme Ventures National Senior Championships at the national stadium, McLaughlin-Whilby who had switched from the Stephen Francis-led MVP to the Maurice Wilson-led Strintec said she was advised by Wilson she would be doing the 400m instead of the 200m, which she had been running for the past few seasons.
Fast forward to the Senior Championships; and after running a personal best 51.03 seconds for fifth place and a spot on the 4x400m relay team she was satisfied.
“Oh my God, I am so happy although the 400m hurts like wow.
“I am just grateful; last year this time, I was at home watching the Championships so I am very glad that I have made the Olympic team.”
She had been selected for the IAAF World Indoors earlier in the year but did not get to run as Patricia Hall tripped on the first leg of the 4x400m. “This was supposed to be my comeback year as I was out for a year,
“I was not prepared for this 400m, I was focusing on the 200m but three weeks ago coach decided I was going to do the 400m and I just embraced the idea and I finished fifth and on my way to the Olympics and I am happy.”
Will she concentrate now on the one-lap race? Her response: “Mr Wilson told me I can forget about doing the 200m next year I will be doing the 400m,” she confirmed.
