A good deed
Shortly after the Jamaica Observer North and East published a story highlighting 83-year-old Eric Patterson’s plea for help, one good Samaritan responded by supplying much-needed groceries to the Bowden, St Thomas, resident.
“I decided to give a helping hand to Mr Patterson not only because I was touched by his story but also because God put me in the position, at that particular time, to be of some assistance in the little way I could,” Charlene Campbell said.
Campbell, who is from Manchester, e-mailed the Observer enquiring how she could assist Patterson after reading about his struggles.
“I’m an emotional person and I always try to make others happy in whatever way I can, even if it’s to share an inspirational thought or quote.
“I asked God for all the things that I might enjoy life; he gave me life that I might enjoy all things.
“It is a big thing to do a little thing well. If we all unite and think about other people besides ourselves, then we will accomplish so much more,” she added.
Patterson said he fell on hard times after the death of his eldest daughter, despite fathering 11 more children.
“You know, I have mi children dem and dem grow big and deh all bout and overseas, and them naah pay me nuh mind,” he said then.
“A nuff you know; 12 of dem. One dead, so that is 11 — five boys and six girls. Mi shame fi tell you di truth; mi shame fi deh here. Dem naah treat mi good,” he added.
The former Duckenfield sugar worker explained that it was only seven years ago he moved to Bowden where he now resides in a crude, one-bedroom structure.
Since then, he has managed to stay afloat, living off his monthly pension of $1500 and crops he cultivates.
“Mi thank Ms Charlene very, very much and may the Lord continue to strengthen and keep her.
“Mi also haffi thank di Observer ,” Patterson said.
