Hundreds stranded as ferry runs aground
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Several passengers were stranded early Thursday as a ferry – the MV Makouria ran aground due to very low tide.
Reports are that the ferry, which is also carrying several vehicles including an ambulance with a patient who was injured in a motorcycle accident, was crossing the Essequibo River in east central Guyana when it ran into trouble.
According to local reports, the vessel will remain in place until the tide rises and there is sufficient water to lift it off the area.
Sources said although the captain might have been aware of the very low tide, he might have decided to continue the journey due to the presence of the ambulance .
This incident occurred days after another ferry – the MV Sabanto was taken out of operation.
