Unbreakable wins Oswald ‘Ossie’ Steele Memorial Cup
Unbreakable completed his second consecutive victory in 14 days when he won the Oswald ‘Ossie’ Steele Memorial Cup feature at Caymanas Park last Saturday.
Trained by Gresford Smith and ridden by Aaron Chatrie for owner O’Shaun Connection, Unbreakable was the last to leave the gates but came with a strong run on the inside rails in deep stretch to win by over four lengths in the claiming ($450,000-$400,000) event over 1,200 metres.
The winning time was 1:14:2 minutes. “He is fit; very fit at the moment and has been running some good races as well. We won by seven lengths the last time out going 1,500 metres, so I was pretty much confident even going this shorter trip of 1,200 metres.
“We came out of the gates in last position, but did well enough to be in a striking position turning for home and eventually got home quite easily,” Chatrie told the Complete Racing Guide.
FIVE HORSES CLAIMED
Five horses were claimed on the nine-race programme at Caymanas Park last Saturday.
Flying Miracle was claimed from Gresford Smith by Tyrone Prince for Michelle Nichols for $350,000, while Our Creation was taken from Robert Darby Snr by Errol Waugh acting as both trainer and owner, also for $350,000 from the first race.
In the second race, Bigbrowngreyhope was claimed from Ryan Darby by Marlon Anderson for himself for $450,000; Aunt Hilda was claimed by Ian Parsard for Karen Parsard for $400,000 from Dennis Lee, and Gregory Forsythe claimed Diferentgeneration for Deleta Brewster from Clifford Atkinson Jr for $450,000.
COLIN FERGUSON – A WINNER
Trainer Colin Ferguson, who has been finding it difficult to saddle winners this season, finally found his way to the winner’s enclosure.
His first winner came last Saturday when No Money Friend, ridden by Ameth Robles, in a front-running display, won the fifth race over 1,500 metres in a time of 1:37:0 minutes.
It’s the 59th time Ferguson has saddled a horse this season. Let’s hope he can bring up that strike rate high for the rest of the 2016 racing year.
FLYING MACHINE, JDA RELEASE MAIDEN TAGS
Flying Machine and Jda released their maiden tags on the nine-race programme at Caymanas Park last Saturday.
Flying Machine, trained by Gary Griffiths and ridden by Hakeem Pottinger, made all convincingly to win the fourth race over 1,200 metres by sixand- a-half lengths over Seeking The Dawn and Reassurance. The winning time was 1:14:1 minutes.
With Omar Walker riding for Wayne DaCosta, Jda, who was running for the first time, came with a strong run on the outside of horses to win by four lengths over Valley of the Cats and Old Braeton despite showing her inexperience by veering in the stretch run. The winning time was 1:14:2 minutes.
