Cain, Stephens shine at JMMB junior tennis tourney
JAMAICA’S Damani Cain and Michaela Stephens captured the boys’ and girls’ 14 and under singles titles, respectively, at the 2016 International Tennis Federation (ITF) juniors tournament at NCB Wellness and Recreation Centre yesterday.
The Jamaican 14 and under boys and girls are playing in the Central America and Caribbean Tennis Confederation (COTECC) tournament, held jointly with the ITF boys and girls 18 and under juniors tournament.
Cain, seeded second in the boys’ 14 and under singles, defeated top seed Aron Fields from Antigua in straight sets 7-6 (7-5 tie-breaker), 6-2.
Stephens, who was unseeded in the girls’ 14 and under main draw, came from a set down to top her Jamaican opponent, the top seed Jenna Harris in three sets 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
Stephens captured her second title by teaming with her compatriot Harrison — whom she had defeated in the singles — to win the girls’ doubles. The Jamaican pair seeded number one easily defeated the unseeded pair of Selena Bird and Katherine Dibbs in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
The boys’ 14 and under doubles final was won by the numnber two seed Guyanese pair of Jordan Beaton and Heimraj Resaul, who defeated top pair Cain of Jamaica and Fields of Antigua in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.
Viraj Sharma of Guyana beat Russell Fairman of Jamaica to win the consolation boys’ 14 singles 4-0, 4-0, while the girls’ 14 and under consolation singles was won by Bird of Jamaica, who defeated Ciara Pooran of Guyana 4-1, 4-0.
The Jamaicans failed to qualify for the boys’ 18 and under singles semi-finals as they were knocked out in their quarter-finals at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre yesterday. The Jamaican girls did not reach the quarter-final round as they all lost in the second round.
Only Jamaican-born Roger Lyn, now representing the United States of America, progressed to today’s semi-finals. Lyn, seeded seventh, defeated Demitri Bird of the USA in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. He will meet second seed Edson Ortiz Tovar.
Jamaica’s eight seed Jacob Bicknell was also beaten in the quarter-final by top seed Brian Shi of the USA in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Sixth-seeded Blaise Bicknell, representing the USA, was beaten by second seed Edson Ortiz Tovar of Mexico in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
Top seed Shi will face Kyle Frankel of Aruba, who eliminated third seed Alexander Stater of the USA in straight sets 6-4, 6-1.
In the girls’ 18 and under singles, top seed Hurricane Black will meet unseeded Gabriella Price in today’s semi-finals. Black disposed of fifth seed Hind Abdelouahid 6-10, 6-0, while Price knocked out Alyssa Mayo of the USA 6-1, 6-1.
Second seed Alexandria Tutecky of Canada meets eight seed River Hart of Canada in the other semi-final. Tutecky easily got past second seed Najah Dawson of the USA 6-1, 6-0, while Hart knocked out Jenna Dean of the USA 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in quarter-finals yesterday.
