Bicknell, Dibbs advance in ITF Jamaica International Invitational junior tourney
JAMAICA’S Jacob Bicknell and Emma Dibbs advanced to the second round of the 2016 International Tennis Federation (ITF) Jamaica Invitational Junior Tournament at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre yesterday.
Bicknell, seeded at eight, crushed Daniel Hill of Canada in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 in the boys’ 18 and under singles. He will face Dennis Moses of Zimbabwe, who defeated Milledge Cossu of the United States of America (USA) 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker).
Dibbs, who is unseeded, knocked out Emanuelle Mottley of Barbados in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in the girls’ 18 and under singles. She will face fourth-seeded Jenna Dean of the USA in her second round match.
Meanwhile, top seed in the boys’ 18 and under singles, Brian Shi of the USA eliminated Andrew Bicknell of Jamaica in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, while second seed Tovar Ortiz of Mexico was down to meet Cliff Dwyer of Jamaica at press time yesterday.
Hurricane Black of the USA, the top seed in the girls’ 18 and under singles, received a bye to the second round where she faces Rita Colyer of Canada.
In the Central American and Caribbean Tennis Confederation tournament for boys and girls 14 and under singles, second seed Damani Cain of Jamaica beat Joshua Kalekeyezi of Guyana 6-1, 6-2 in the boys’ 14 and under singles, while top seed Jenna Harris of Jamaica defeated Lauren Fullerton of the Cayman Islands 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the girls’ 14 and under singles.
The tournament continues today at 9:00 am at the Eric Bell Centre, Piccadilly Road, and the National Commercial Bank (NCB) Sports Club on Phoenix Avenue.
