Seeds crash from junior tennis championships
SEVERAL seeded players were yesterday knocked out of their respective age-groups singles categories at the quarter-final stage of the 2016 Blue Mountain Caribbean Junior Tennis Championships being held at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston.
The upset of the seeds started on Tuesday, and it continued with more seeds being eliminated yesterday.
One of the seeds who fell yesterday was Karan Chatani of Jamaica. He lost 5-7, 6-1, 10-5 (super tie break) to unseeded Ryan Cox, also of Jamaica, in the boys’ 16-and-under. Top seed Cole McNair of Jamaica went down 6-2, 6-2 to unseeded Hiemral Resaul of Guyana in boys’ 14-and-under.
Kalvea Fraser of Guyana eliminated second seed Moesha Fox of Jamaica in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 in the girls’ 14 and under.
The championships continue this morning with semi-final matches in all four age groups for boys and girls, beginning at 9:00.
The boys’ 18-and-under singles semi-final will see top seed Blaise Bicknell of Jamaica facing unseeded Jean Phillipe Murray of St Lucia, while second-seeded Cliff Dwyer of Jamaica is scheduled to take on unseeded Luke Quaynor of Jamaica.
All four players were winners of their quarter-finals yesterday. Bicknell crushed Mario Campbell of Jamaica 6-0, 6-1, while Murray stopped Louis Quaynor of Jamaica 6-4, 6-2 10-7 (super tie breaker). Luke Quaynor whipped Callum Theaker of Cayman 6-0, 6-2, while Dwyer rallied to beat Matthew Quaynor of Jamaica 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 (super tie-breaker).
One of the girls’ 18-and-under semi-finals is to be contested between top seed Emma Dibbs of Jamaica and third seed Olivia Simms, also of Jamaica. In the other match-up, fourth-seeded Hayley McNair of Jamaica is set to face Lauren Rickman of Jamaica.
