Quaynor, Stephens triumph at All-Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships
LUKE Quaynor and Michaela Stephens captured the 18 and under boys’ and girls’ singles titles, respectively, at the 2016 Access Financial Services Limited All-Jamaica Junior Tennis Championships that ended at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Saturday.
The Quaynor brothers, Luke and Louis, produced brilliant tennis in the 18 and under Boys’ final. Their playing skill sets were extremely good, which brought cheers from the spectators on a regular basis, as they pounded each other with an array of stroke play.
Fifteen-year-old Luke did not have things his own way, as he had to work very hard to beat his 13-year-old sibling in their sets — 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 — in what was considered the best match of the championships.
The unseeded brothers in the main draw had knocked out the four top seeded players earlier in the tournament.
Meanwhile, in the 18 and under Girls’ singles final, third-seed Michaela Stephens, 13, continued on her giant-killing form as she defeated second seed Selena Blythe in straight sets 6-3, 7-5 for her second straight title in this age group.
Quaynor paid tribute to his brother: “It was a good match as he pushed me very hard, especially in the second set. I had to apply more pressure on him in the third set as my brother was playing really well.”
Louis replied: “I did not play well in the first set, but I found my shots well in the second set: But in the third, Luke applied the pressure hard on me to make sure of his victory and not a defeat.”
Stephens was happy to accomplish another win in the Girls’ 18 and under. “I think this is a very great achievement for me because I started to defeat the players who are seeded ahead of me and even older who used to beat me. I was usually beaten by the top seeds, but now I can match them evenly or beat them as well, stopping Emma Dibbs and Blythe, the two top seeds in the championships,” said Stephens. “It’s nice to have won again, and I am looking forward to doing well in the Caribbean Junior Championships, which is on this week.”
Meanwhile, the Boys’ 16 and under final was not played as top seed Myles Harrison gained a walkover from third seed John Azar Jr, who was suffering from a little weakness as he has been recovering from ZIKV.
Azar Jr, who was the defending champion in the 14 and under Boys’ singles, lost to second seed Damani Cain 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. This was the match Azar Jr got drained, so he could not play in the 16 and under final.
It was a very good day for Stephens, who was seeded two in the Girls’ 16 and under singles. She defeated top seed Jenna Harrison in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to capture the title before facing Blythe in the 18 and under Girls’ final.
Jenna Harrison, the second seed. had beaten top seed Emma Dibbs in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 to win the 14 and under Girls’ singles crown, while top seed Daniel Azar won the 12 and under Boys’ singles title with a 6-3, 6-2 win over third-seeded Alexander Bicknell.
Selena Bird defeated Alyssa James 6-0, 6-1 to win the Girls’ 12 and under round robin final.
