Jamaicans advance at Blue Mountain Caribbean Junior Tennis Championships
SEVERAL Jamaicans are through to the second round of the 2016 Blue Mountain Caribbean Junior Tennis Championships, which got under way at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston yesterday.
The championships continue this morning, starting at 9:00 with several players in the 18 and under boys’ singles in action.
In the only games played in the Boys’ 18 and under singles, second seed Cliff Dwyer of Jamaica defeated Anthony Burgess, also of Jamaica, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3, while unseeded Matthew Quaynor of Jamaica beat Karan Chatani, also of Jamaica, in two sets, 6-4, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Myles Harrison, who is top seed in the Boys’ 16 and under singles, crushed Ariel Khan of Antigua and Barbuda in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, while second seed Damani Cain of Jamaica knocked out Keenan Persaud of Guyana in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
Callum Theaker of the Cayman Islands eliminated third seed Ruben Pinchas of Jamaica in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0; fourth seed Karan Chatani of Jamaica stopped Cole McNair of Jamaica 6-2, 6-3.
Unseeded Jordan Lick of Jamaica crushed Kimel Williams of Antigua and Barbuda 6-0, 6-0; Ryan Cox of Jamaica knocked out Nelldeep Ghosh of the Cayman Islands 6-0, 6-0.
Michaela Stephens of Jamaica, seeded at number three, whipped unseeded Lauren Fullerton of the Cayman Islands in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the second round of Girls’ 16 and under singles.
In the Boys’ 14 and under singles, Jakub Neveril of the Cayman Islands eliminated Vijay Sharma of Guyana 6-0, 6-1; Harrison Clough of the Cayman Islands defeated Viral Sharma of Guyana 6-1, 6-1; Joshua Kalekyezi of Guyana beat Nelldeep Ghosh of the Cayman Islands 6-1, 6-1.
Some 25 singles matches in all age groups are down to be played today including Ruben Pinchas of Jamaica vs Daniel Chatani of Jamaica; Jason Lawson of Jamaica vs Callum Theaker of Cayman.
