Junior golfers claim 2nd place in regional tourney
Jamaica’s Junior Golf Team played steadily on the final day of the 54-hole Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship at the Barbados Golf Club to secure second place behind defending champions Puerto Rico, who also won the team trophy in their home country last year.
Notable mentions include the performance of Sebert Walker Jr, who placed 10th in the tournament overall and third in 15 and under boys’, and Justin Burrowes, who came fifth in the same age group category. Among girls’ 17 and under Tiana Cruz placed second, and Kei Harris placed sixth. Hannah Foster pulled off Jamaica’s only win with her first place finish in the girls’ 15 & under category, tying overall in the tournament for 12th place with teammate Tiana Cruz.
With several team members representing Jamaica for the first time, the future of Jamaican Golf looks brighter than ever. This performance tops that of fourth place in 2015, and next year Jamaica will be looking for the win.
Team coach Jason Lopez was elated. “I’m very proud of the team. It’s the best result we’ve had in a very, very long time. The players worked hard and were diligent. We had a great time over here, the team spirit was wonderful. We’re looking forward to improving on this performance, and winning the tournament next year.”
Attendance of the Jamaica team in this year’s 29th staging of the Caribbean Amateur Junior Golf Championship was made possible through several fund-raising efforts of the Jamaica Junior Golf Association, and the sponsorship of the Sandals Foundation.
