John Azar Jnr leads winners at Junior Tennis Champs
JOHN Azar Jnr, along with Damani Cain, Jenna Harrison, Daniel Azar, and Jordan Vaz won singles titles in their respective age groups at the 2016 Liguanea Club Open Junior Tennis Championships which ended at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston on Sunday.
The highlight of the two-day singles champions was in the boys 18 and under singles where fourth-seed Azar Jnr pulled off a major upset by defeating the top seed Daniel Hill in their semi-final encounter on Saturday.
The 14-year-old Azar Jnr, who generally competes in the 16 and under and 14 and under categories, rallied from a set down before knocking out 17-year-old Hill 1-6, 6-4 and 10-4, the latter being a super tie-breaker set.
Hill, who attends Wolmer’s, has dominated the 18 and under boys singles on a number of occasions, while Azar Jr, who is a Hillel Academy student, was winning this age group for the first time.
Azar Jr in the final against third seed Gregory Spencer went on to capture the boys 18 and under singles title in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. Spencer had defeated second-seed Jason Lawson in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in his semi-final on Saturday.
“It was a tough match, especially in the second set when Spencer was up 5-3 using a lot of top spin. I had to find (a way) to counter him, which I did in the next games… I broke his serve to level at 5-5 and then won the next two games to clinch the match and title,” Azar Jr said.
Tournament Director, Llockett McGregor, said he was very pleased with the performances.
“Liguanea Club was pleased with the players as they are very promising and we saw some good matches being played,” McGregor said.
