Dwyer, Stephens among winners at Junior Tennis Championship
Cliff Dwyer, Michaela Stephens, Demani Cain, Cole McNair, and Moesha Fox won their respective singles at the inaugural staging of the 2016 Damion Johnson All-island Junior Tennis Championships which ended at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre, Picadilly Road on Sunday.
The two-day junior championships, which started on Saturday, consisted of only singles matches in the various age groups which featured players from Kingston, St Andrew, St James and St Ann.
It is first time that Johnson, a well-regarded Jamaica singles player, has come forward in the development of the sport.
In the Boys, 18 and Under singles, top seed Cliff Dwyer, who is a 17-year-old student of Liberty Academy, easily defeated Cain of Wolmer’s Boys’ 6-3, 6-1 to win the singles title.
Second-seeded 13-year-old, Michaela Stephens got the better of top seed Selena Blythe 7-5 and 6-2 to win the Girls’ 18 and Under singles.
Top seed Cain had a tough second-set battle with second seed Tariq Simons before going on to win 6-0, 7-6 (7-3 tiebreaker) to take home the Boys’ 16 and Under singles title.
Stephens, seeded two in the Girls’ 16 and Under singles, captured her second title when she defeated top seed, 13-year-old Jenna Harrison after a super tiebreaker third set 6-1, 5-7, 10-5.
McNair made easy work of Keyon’Dre Clarke, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 to capture the Boys, 14 and Under singles title, while the Girls’ 14 and Under singles crown was won by top seed, 12-year-old Fox, who attends St Andrew High School.
Top seed Delano Reeves beat Keyon’Dre Clarke 8-4 to win the Boys’ 12 and Under singles title.
