Newnham captures Sandals National Golf Championship
Jonathan Newnham maintained a good form, established superiority over his competitors and struck a sumptuous finish in the Sandals-sponsored Jamaica National Amateur Golf Championship at the Sandals Golf and Country Club in Ocho Rios.
Newnham, who was the runner-up for the past two years, finally got the job done when he shot a one under par score of 70 on Monday’s final day of the three-day 54-hole torunament in cool, overcast conditions.
The Caribbean champion added the national accolade to his name with a combined total of 211, after scoring 74 and 67, respectively, on the first two days. He will also be driving a BMW motorcar for a weekend courtesy of ATL Autobahn.
After holding a three-stroke lead heading into the final day, Newnham eventually finished 10 strokes ahead of the Sandals Academy pair of Oshae Haye and Zandre Roye. Haye shot a one over par score of 72, while Roye was three over at 74, as both ended with similar scores of 221.
Early leaders Delroy Johnson and Sean Morris both found the going tough on the green and finished further back with scores of 225 and 223, respectively. Johnson shot a disappointing 10 over par score of 81, with Morris going three over par at 74.
Though elated with the win, Newnham pointed out that there is still work to do ahead of the national trials in June.
“It feels pretty good. I was proud of the way I hung in there because it wasn’t my best performance, but I managed to get it around and got the job done,” he told the Jamaica Observer.
“It was a solid three days, but I have some work to do with my long game heading into the national trials. But I’m going to enjoy this accomplishment for now,” he added.
Haye, who ended fourth last year, was pleased to have jumped two places higher.
“I’m pleased with my performance, I was a few strokes off a good score on the first day, so I maintained my mental game and it got me this far,” he explained.
For Roye, the back nine was key on the final day as he finished with a level-par score of 35.
“This is my first time finishing in contention on the final day and I am really pleased. The achievement has not really soaked in as yet, but I’m just hoping to improve my form at the national trials,” he told the Observer.
Edwin Lowe, Earl Manning, Frank Jackson, Mike Bachstetz and Lincoln Williams won the other male categories.
Meanwhile, Crystal Grant of the University of Technology, Jamaica (Utech) copped her first major championship accolade by topping the female 0-12 category. She won ahead of Michelle Gabay and will be celebrating with a weekend for two at Sandals.
“I believe my first two rounds of 74 and 76, respectively ,were the key to winning this tournament. I didn’t perform as well as I had anticipated today (yesterday), but I’m pleased nonetheless,” she said.
Sally Roper and Valrie Grant were the other winners in the female category.
Tristan Brown was the top golfer in the junior category.
