Gas Pro Open Junior Tennis Champs serves off today
Some of the island’s top juniors, including Michaela Stephens, Jenna Harrison and Mia Minott, are scheduled to compete in the fifth staging of the Gas Pro Open Junior Tennis Championships scheduled for today at the Liguanea Club.
According to Harrison, she is optimistic that she will be successful against her arch-rival Stephens in the competition. “I am looking forward to the tournament. It will be an intense game with Stephens as she is always my biggest competitor,” Harrison said.
The two-day event is set to begin at 9:00 am on the opening day and will also see Cliff Dwyer and Gregory Spencer vying for championship honours. “I am looking forward to playing Daniel Hill. It is always very competitive playing with him,” Spencer said.
For the first time players will journey from across the island, including Mandeville, Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios, to compete. Also expected for the competition are several overseas players from the United States.
Massy Gas Products, under the brand Gas Pro, has pledged its support for the continued development of tennis in Jamaica. Derva Vassell, marketing officer at Gas Pro, said the company is serious about community and national development.
“As part of our corporate initiative, we believe that this is a great opportunity for us to give back and to aid in the development of non-traditional sports,” Vassell said.
“We are aware that sponsorship is the livelihood of any competition, and we are happy to partner with the tournament as we seek to inspire young players who can use this medium to excel both physically and academically,” she added.
Tournament Director Llockett McGregor is anticipating an engaging and exciting tournament. “We have the All Jamaica Tournament coming up and players from this competition will receive ranking points towards that tournament.
“We are looking forward to a solid competition and we are expecting the participants to showcase their talent.”
The juniors will compete in the boys’ 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18, while for the girls’ 10, 12, 14 and 16 are the other events.
The finals of the Gas Pro Open Junior Tennis Championships will be played tomorrow at 12:00 noon.
